Criterion Games, creator of the much-loved Burnout franchise, is to step away from the racing game genre to make something new, the studio's boss Alex Ward has revealed.

Ward took to Twitter in order to quell fan expectations of a Criterion-developed new Burnout, Need for Speed or Road Rash game.

"Here is what I want folks to know," he Tweeted. "Some folks are eternally disappointed. Nothing I can do about that. So many tweets asking for new Burnout.

"Equally many tweets asking for a new NFS game from us. Also Road Rash. Whilst I love all of those games, I am personally not doing any.

Ward continued: "After over a decade of making racing games it's time to make something new. It is early days thus I have nothing to 'announce' or talk about.

"I will do my best to keep folks in the loop who want to follow what we play or what inspires us. Or what we might be listening to.

"But if you are following me expecting some Megaton of a new Burnout game, or an Underground remake then I have to disappoint you."

Regarding Burnout, Ward said that the studio isn't done with the franchise and will return to it "when it feels right".

A return of "gun porn" shooter Black - last seen on PS2 and Xbox - looks less likely, however.

"No Black2 either folks," wrote Ward. "Volumes to tell on that topic, but will save that for when I get a book deal... "

With EA's Ghost Games studio working on a new Need for Speed title this leaves Ward and his team able to focus on something entirely new. Let's just hope some of Criterion's magic rubs off on the Swedish development team.
