Mario Kart 8 is the Wii U's "last chance", an online retailer has told MCV, suggesting that the console's days may be numbered should the upcoming racer fail to rejuvenate sales.

Speaking under condition of anonymity, the 'top buyer' at an online games store is alleged to have said that "there is only one real last chance for Wii U and it is Mario Kart 8. It could still be the game that sparks interest in Wii U, but it would need to be combined with a more mass market retail price."

Other retailers appear to be in agreement, too, with one calling for Nintendo to release a £199 hardware bundle featuring the game.

Nintendo announced last week that it had slashed its fiscal year forecasts for Wii U from 9 million units to 2.8 million units. Both Amazon and Argos later dropped the price of the Wii U Premium to £179.99.

Mario Kart 8 is due to go on sale this spring.

Well, an anonymous source told ME that this article is just clickbait. See? Journalism is easy.

The only console at a sensible price in my opinion, even if it has been brought down due to current sales. The new Mario game is very good, and Mario Kart looks it too also after watching its preview via y'tube. Comparing with the latest consoles, Mario U is arguably the best modern game to date. Some argue Wii U is not next gen, but you should never take graphics over gameplay. Mario Kart looks fantastic. If I wanted graphics, I would buy a gaming PC, not a console.

Those 2 games, along with a new Zelda might make me more likely in buying one in future, along with some decent RPGs. Their struggle is due to releasing the console far too early. They should have waited until now in order to release the machine alongside both Mario and Mario Kart in order to compete. Mario Kart alone will boost sales a little, but no one knows by how much. They need to advertise far more in my opinion. I have seen xbox one and ps4 adverts all over the tv, aiming at the home in general as all-round entertainment systems (arguably the death of true consoles), but next to no ads from Nintendo. Nintendo don't seem to care about competition, and need to wake up in that respect.

More original titles would be a good thing as opposed to constant sequels, but that goes for all systems (yes Call of Duty 2015 is on the way along every other rehashed FPS). Nintendo are at least good at adding enough new ideas to make their sequels different enough from the last to warrant interest, although I don't know how different they can really make Mario Kart in order for it to appeal to everyone.

Third party companies will likely focus on other systems regardless of sales going up or not, as reaching the largest audience will be what is important to them in order to make the most sales, but I have never bought a Nintendo system to mainly play third party titles anyway. Nintendos franchises will need to keep the system alive, but I would not want rushed releases. It would seem after the massive sales of the Wii, they are back to being back of the pack, as they were with the Gamecube, but that system had many great games by its end, which now go for large sums on ebay for collectors. I think by this time next year we will know if they have a dead system or not.

New and exciting isn't going to cut it this time imo. What nintendo needs to do is give consumers what THEY want instead of trying to force some sort of new gimmicky idea on us again. But largely their biggest problem is that their system isnt up to scratch in order for 3rd party devs to want to release games on it.

Well Nintendo is trying to use nostalgia to shift the Wii-U by bringing out games that are old IP (nothing new here.) However it is starting to get to the point where people have grown up without Nintendo but instead on Xbox, Playstation or computers. Nintendo did great back in the day because it was either Ninendo or Sega, plus they were not afraid to release new IP's back then.

I just feel as if Nintendo needs to bring something new and exciting to the table or they might be on their way out.

Anyone notice how there is a Starfox on every "successful" Nintendo console BUT the Wii-u?

You think so? I just hope so. Especially with the speculation of Nintendo mothballing consoles altogether. I hope Smash Bros does... well... smashingly. I think sales figures were so low this past year because two competing consoles came out in Q4. Competing consoles with a better variety of games, something wiiU needs to keep up with. But Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Zelda whenever that happens, etc., are hot selling franchises that might save this system. Hopefully.

Super Smash Bro's will sell the wii-U like mad, so really the online retailers will be losing out, I do think Nintendo are starting to push it a bit and they might actually be losing trust in retailers.

Surely Smash Bros is enough of a console shifter for them to have 2 chances left?
