Wii U hardware sales rose by more than 685 per cent in the UK last week, Nintendo has told MCV.

The sudden sales spike appears to be due to the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, which launched last Friday, October 4, and debuted at no.4 in the UK All-Formats chart.

"We have long believed that software sells hardware and it's great to see that reaffirmed this week with an uplift of Wii U hardware sales to coincide with the launch of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD," Nintendo UK head of consumer marketing James Honeywell told the mag.

Despite the sales increase, however, it isn't known how many units were actually sold.

Nintendo announced yesterday that it is to release a range of official Wii U bundles in time for Christmas, including next month's Mario & Luigi Premium Pack, Wii Party U Basic Pack and Just Dance 2014 Basic Pack.

Erm, they did get a Wii U Zelda game out in time for the PS4/Xbox launches, even if it is a HD remake. Xbox One will hopefully fail, it deserves too.

Great news. I hope Nintendo's success continues. I'm sick of all the doubters/haters that only ever care about first person shooters and having PC style gaming on their consoles. Nintendo were one of the first to bring gaming into people's living rooms. I hope they are around for many more years to come. I will definitely buy a Wii U if they continue to do well like this.

Glad this is working out, and with future exclusive titles that are coming (Mario 3D world, Donkey Kong country, Mario kart, Sonic lost world, Smash bros, Bayonetta 2) this is only a start. Remember 3DS? Well it's success started just like this. Also, winter for Nintendo will be big in Japan more than anywhere else due to next gen launching there only in 2014. That country is mad for Nintendo exclusives and can you blame them?

Not gonna change third party developers or publishers minds on making games available on the WiiU. And even their big business supporters like Ubisoft aren't releasing DLC for AC4, it's really questionable what's gonna happen for em.

It's more appealing to me than either PS4 or Xbox atm, but that will probably change by this time next year. Just not enough games to be worth the investment personally yet. I hope it picks up though whatever, I don't have as much contempt as most people seem to.

Good to see the Wii U picking up at least a little bit. Controversially, I'm happy/ satisfied with my purchase of my Wii U. I'm not going to try to recommend it to people though. If you're the kind of person who thinks you'll enjoy the games coming to the console soon, you'll already know whether or not you will get one eventually.

It's not something for everyone, but it's definitely the console for me. :)

Yeah, as Impressiv it sounds when you read it first, its hard to say what it actual means without any Sale-Numbers.
But even when its not that much in the End, its still impressiv that a Remake can sold some Consoles.

and btw: I Love Wind Waker HD, but I always loved Wind Waker <3

Guess what? I love my WII U so much I have switched all ps4 releases such as WatchDogs and AC4 to support nintendo. I feel that both the xbox largely and ps4 have faltered in this. There are flashes of nice titles but no more than nintendo has. yep I have all 3 and a ps4 on the way yet I am still a fanboy who is loyal. Hateturds are multiplayer hacks playing HALO or CoD with millions of other vulgar, uneducated, can't solve a puzzle game for the life of me poster boy living in mom's basement type-b boy

I keep seeing the adverts for the Zelda bundle and I'm more tempted by the Wii-U at the moment than any of the launch day next gen games. Despite this, I won't be getting one.

Imagine how different the xmas sales might have been if they could have gotten a Wii U Zelda game out in time for the PS4 and Xbox One launches.

The problem with the Wii U will be the same problem that the Wii have - people will buy the system for a small handful of first party games, play for a couple of weeks, and then never touch the damn thing again.
