MTV Multiplayer and the NPD Group has put together a new list of the best-selling games of 2008 in the US, now combining unit sales of multi-format titles into one entity.

The previously reported list had Wii Play in first place with 5.28 million units sold, followed by Mario Kart Wii, but the combined sales chart paints a different picture. Wii Play does, however, remain top. Not even the combined might of Madden NFL 09, totalling 11 versions, could topple it, managing 5.25 million units. In third place is GTA 4, which sold a combined 5.22 million units (5.18 million on Xbox 360/PS3 and 40,000 on PC).

Mario Kart Wii is bumped down to No.4 with sales of five million units, and Call of Duty: World at War is at No.5 with a combined tally of 4.63 million units.

If I could find Wii Play without the controller, especially for £5, I would buy it. The Tank game alone would justify the purchase. Also, it is probably worth noting that Wii Play is consistently sold out in retail stores, and it could probably have sold another couple of million.

I would be interested to see how many copies of Wii Play would have sold if it hadn't basically been bundled with a controller for £5. Even from a 'casual' perspective, it was a terrible game, with most of the mini-games being bloody awful, and with so little depth and content. Amazing really that one of Nintendo's worst games ever has become one of the biggest games of the last few years.
