Nintendo has put out its post February NPD press release, confirming Wii sales of nearly 753,000 units, but choosing to focus on the huge success of Wii Play.

The mini-game collection, which comes packaged with a Wii Remote, has now sold more than 10 million units in the US since its debut in February 2007. The title is the top-selling software on all consoles and portable systems in the US, according to Nintendo.

“Wii Play mini-games are fun and they get people playing together,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

“Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller, that indicates that there are now more than 10 million people who have an extra Wii Remote controller in their homes. When added to the 12.7 million Wii Remote controllers that have sold separately, this reinforces the growing ‘social gaming’ trend we have been seeing where friends and family use their Wii games as a social hub – both in person and online.”

Wii system sales were up about 74 per cent over February 2008, with lifetime sales nearing 19 million. The Nintendo DS also continued to sell well, with a further 588,000 units bringing lifetime sales in the US to nearly 29 million.

Agreed. I wonder what sales would have been like if they'd bundled it with a great game.

But technically it's a free game with a controller and everyone's buying it for the controller anyway. It's just the way the news report is worded, then, that's the problem.

'Wii Remote Controller with bundled WiiPlay games has now sold over 10 million in the US' would be a better description?

And yet, it's a terrible game with only one or two mini-games even worth your time. I wonder if it would have sold well had it been, say, a $20-30 standalone product.
