I write about games for a living, but I wouldn't say I'm hardcore when it comes to my gaming tastes or abilities. I'll gladly play the latest FPS, hack 'n' slash or racer, but Normal is my standard go-to difficulty setting. Donkey Kong Country Returns is way harder than Normal. At one point I started a boss stage with 52 red balloons (lives). By the time I decided to let the grinning, flag-waving pig finish the level for me I'd been reduced to just 14 red balloons. The damn swine. I gave in and conceded that I'm not skilled enough to play a game about a cartooney Gorilla who wears a tie.

Martin Gaston, Staff Writer - Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, DS

Here's how Professor Layton works: I start each puzzle with the best of intentions, do my best to work it out and then promptly bugger it all up. After fumbling my way to an answer I - and here's the confession - usually restart the DS. Yes! Now I have all the picarats! I understand the Hint Coins are supposed to help out, but seeing as I don't fancy pretending that my hand is a pneumatic drill on the screen I don't really find many. I did exactly the same with the Curious Village, too. I've never heard of anyone else using such underhand tactics to get through the game, so I'm assuming I'm the only one shameful enough to play like this.

Well it took me long enough. I’ve spent an entire bloody month telling myself I should try and finish this game and putting it off because it’s, give or take, one thousand hours long. But it’s brilliant. I’m actually surprised how much I cared when my horse inevitably keeled over from exhaustion. It’s the kind of emotional response to a fake animal that I’ve usually saved for when I watch Old Yeller. RIP Trotto :-(

Tom Pearson, Video Producer - Mass Effect 2, Xbox 360

Wow, the dialogue is tremendously time consuming. Five hours in and I’ve barely peeled this orange. Looking at my pile of shame in the corner, I thought it about time to start the lengthy journey that is Mass Effect 2. Lots of coaching has been given to me prior to my fight with the universe, most of it being about how I should play a girl, and be a total slag to everyone. It’s not that I don’t like girls, it’s just I feel a bit weird when I’m playing a female character and my girlfriend is watching me chat up some virtual space hunk. As a male character, I immediately tried to chat up Kelly on the ship’s deck, but the clueless tart obviously wanted none of it. I’m the James Bond of space for crying out loud, I should be able to get any space floozy I want. Seriously though; If Mass Effect decision-making has any relation to real life, my future kids have no chance of successful social interaction.

Jamin Smith, Staff Writer – Pac-Man CE DX, XBLA, PS3

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX screenshot

My free time this week has been consumed with one thing and one thing only: trying to beat the Pac-Man scores of my colleagues. I started playing the game some time after Martin and Tommy P, which meant I was going to have to learn the ropes before tackling their scores. My first few runs at Championship II were pathetic; measly figures in the region of 500,000 – right at the bottom of my friends leaderboard. After a few hours (and studying the replays of the world number 1), however, I was comfortably breaking the 1 million mark, and it wasn’t long before I was approaching the scores of my peers. I beat Pearson’s score the next day, and revelled in throwing some smack talk about on Twitter. Bad idea. My score was beaten within the hour, with Tom not only surpassing me, but reigning champ Martin too. Later the same evening, Martin came back to reclaim his title, and I was relegated to last place in our little competition. This weekend I’ll be aiming to fix that.

Finished Splatterhouse - a really enjoyable experience, much to my surprise.

Just started RDR: Undead Nightmare, so I'm looking forward to trying a bit more of that.

Otherwise still have Assassins Creed: Brotherhood and Fable 3 to crack on, just so busy with degree work to have much time for gaming this week. :-/

Mainly playing Resonance of Fate, really enjoyable and a rare challenging RPG in a sea of easy/boring.

Little bit of Trials HD as well.

I was playing Assassins Creed 2, but my xbox decided to delete all my gameplay, so have to start again FFFUUUUUUUUUU.

Also, some Pac-Man C.E. DX, which is amazing, but i've hit the wall at around 1.8 million.

I finished the campaing on Blops, been doing some online and some zombies but starting to lose interest in it all now.

Played a fair bit of Hot Pursuit which I'm really enjoying.

And played a little Spiderman Shattered Dimensions which seems decent.

For me again it's been:

GT5
Assassins Creed 2
PES 2010
BC2

I even suffered a moment of creativity and proceeded to create a setting on the Far Cry 2 map creator just for the hell of it. Fell asleep shortly after though and have yet to return to it. I feel that the pang of creative inspiration has lapsed and I won't go back to it for a while ;)

Just finished Enslaved which was very good but was held back from being great by some dodgy gameplay elements - and an annoying camera.

Played Tron Evolution for about an hour and a half this morning and was not over keen so I don't think I'll be carrying on with it.

Will be starting Assassins Creed Brotherhood this evening.

BlOps - Still quite in love with this game, probably the best Call of Duty online since Modern Warfare and I have sunk almost a day into it now.

StarCraft 2 - RTS Genius

Poker Night at the Inventory - Very funny

GT 5 - I'm doing what I do with every Racing Sim - Losing intrest

Splinter Cell Conviction - This should just be called 24 the game (2), Angry man, daughter in danger, terrorist plot, gonna save the day whatever the cost and awesome at shooting.

DragonBall Z Raging Blast 2 - Yeh, it's still awesome going SSJ2 with Gohan, but the game is pretty flawed if you're playing it for any extended period of time. The combat is complex but simplistic, and I'm not sure how to explain why. The fighting itself is pretty basic, so they've put in place some arbitrary rulesets and limitations to artificially inflate the difficulty and give the illusion of variety. The worst thing about these battles is that they can occasionally be obscenely difficult. Like being on zero health for an entire battle and having to beat 3 enemies all as powerful as you...

Gran Turismo 5 - This is my first racing sim, and it's not as much of a simulation as I was expecting. I can get away with - and in fact sometimes choose to - drive off road to take a shortcut, and the AI is just completely unrealistic. Put aside the terrible menu system and convoluted progression mode as being two of this game's major flaws, and you're left with its biggest offender: the terrible AI. That said, I've still really enjoyed getting to level 18 or so this past week and a bit, and I'll probably buy it someday.

VVVVVV - Not as hard as I was expecting, though I've only done half the game, I think. I'll probably play some more right now, because it's super fun despite not being able to change the resolution to fit my 1080p monitor =(

Finished the witcher, really enjoyed this game tho I would say I expected the end to be bit more difficult as it can be quite punishing early on then you level up and its more of a level playing field in the middle, sloppy play can easily see you die in the middle part of the game. But further leveling meant at the end with the witcher sign skills and better weapons I slice up bitches for fun, rather then more difficult opponents it just tended to use larger numbers of them.
