The N64 game you were struggling to remember was Body Harvest. Which, as it happened, was magnificent! I had the exact same "Um ... did I break it?" feeling when I started, too. I think I'll be playing it in small chunks, rather than one sitting, if I'm honest. Might even switch it to easy purely to unlock characters for online quicker.
