Sales of the PS Vita in Japan are down 40 per cent week on week, with only 42,648 units sold in its third week.

Sony’s new handheld shifted a reasonable 325,000 units at launch and 72,000 units during its second week on sale. The third week figure will cast further doubt over whether Sony can afford to continue selling the hardware at its high launch price.

The full hardware chart for the week ended January 1 also reveals that Vita was outsold by the 3DS, PS3 and PSP, shifting 197,952 units, 67,199 units and 62,746 units respectively. Of the platforms which are still considered active in Japan, PS Vita could only beat the Wii.

Life to date figures for the PS Vita stand at 440,000 units. Last month Sony said it had upped the launch shipment of PS Vita in Japan to 700,000 units – at this rate Japan won’t require additional stock for several months.

Japanese Weekly Hardware Chart (December 26 – January 1)

  • 3DS – 197,952
  • PS3 – 67,199
  • PSP – 62,746
  • Vita – 42,648
  • Wii – 33,208
  • DSi XL – 3,356
  • Xbox 360 – 2,453
  • DSi – 2,418
  • PS2 – 1,659
  • DS Lite – 28

The PS Vita’s continued sales slump will be a major concern for Sony, especially if weekly sales continue to fall. Analysts have already stated they believe the handheld is priced too high, but don’t believe Sony will budge on the price this year.
