Thankfully, wasn't.

God of War PSP could have been a 2D side-scrolling game, developer Ready at Dawn has revealed.

The studio considered the move because it wasn't sure the traditional 3D God of War experience was possible on Sony's handheld.

Speaking to Industry Gamers, Ready at Dawn's Dana Jan, lead level designer on the game, said: “There were early discussions of making Chains of Olympus a side-scroller rather than 3D in case the experience couldn’t be fully realized on a handheld.

“This really fuelled us to prove that it could be done.”

The move certainly paid off. God of War: Chains of Olympus, released in early 2008, is considered by many to be the best PSP game ever released.

"Games like God of War don’t usually translate well when they are brought to handhelds. The gameplay, graphics, animation, sound, etc. have a tendency to ‘differ’ from their console counterparts," Jan added.

I bought this the other day, and it's brilliant. For me who hasn't played a God of War until now, I'm expecting big things from GOW3.
