US video game console sales for the month of May have risen by a huge 95 per cent year-on-year, reports The NPD Group.
The increase can be attributed to continued momentum of the PS4 and Xbox One, with the former earning a fifth month as the best-selling system. 3DS was the second best-selling system in May.
NPD analyst Liam Callahan stated that while "much of May 2014's hardware growth was due to Xbox One and PS4, there was also year-over-year growth for the Wii U, and PS Vita".
Wii U sales are reportedly up 85 per cent versus May 2013, putting the system at approximately 60,000 units sold, and Mario Kart 8 was only available for a few days of the month.
Software sales were led by Ubisoft's Watch Dogs which topped that charts, followed by Mario Kart 8 in second. Wolfenstein and MLB 14: The Show were also strong performers.
"Collectively, May 2014 launches sold 800 percent more in dollar sales than May 2013 launches did their respective launch months. New launches represented 50 percent of dollar sales this month, which compared to only 9 percent for new launches in May 2013," commented Callahan.
