Microsoft's senior director of product management Albert Penello believes that the discussion surrounding the performance differences between the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has gotten "way overblown", dismissing the variations in frame rate and resolution between some multiplatform titles as being "pretty minor".
"I believe that the difference in the boxes [PS4 and Xbox One] is not that great and I know what's going on behind the scenes and I probably have access to more information about some of this thing than a lot of people. Sometimes I think people tend to neglect the points that are in my favour and they like to highlight the points that tell me that I am wrong. Right now, I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story.
"I think if you look at the titles that we launched that were multiplatform titles, the bulk of them were the same. I think there was something like 12 titles that released on both platforms and all but three of them had basically the same performance on both boxes.
"Everybody wants to focus on, you know, there's a frame rate thing going on in Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and, okay, there's a lot of reasons why that could be true but we're weeks in. We just shipped, it's a long generation."
He continued: "I think people who bought an Xbox One are going to be in for an awesome generation of games that are only going to get better, and an awesome generation of experiences. I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in the two experiences which are pretty minor."
It was revealed earlier this week that the PS4 version of Tomb Raider runs at 60fps, with the Xbox One version reported to render at 30fps.
The news also follows shortly after the performance differences seen between the two consoles at launch, which saw major titles Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassin's Creed 4 render at higher resolutions on PS4.
Square told VideoGamer.com yesterday that it considers anything above 30fps for Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition as "gravy".
