Microsoft's senior director of product management Albert Penello believes that the discussion surrounding the performance differences between the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has gotten "way overblown", dismissing the variations in frame rate and resolution between some multiplatform titles as being "pretty minor".

"Look, I've had a lot of time to think about this and I believe in what I said," Penello told Gamertag Radio (via Gaming Bolt), referring to comments he made about the Xbox One's power last year.

"I believe that the difference in the boxes [PS4 and Xbox One] is not that great and I know what's going on behind the scenes and I probably have access to more information about some of this thing than a lot of people. Sometimes I think people tend to neglect the points that are in my favour and they like to highlight the points that tell me that I am wrong. Right now, I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story.

"I think if you look at the titles that we launched that were multiplatform titles, the bulk of them were the same. I think there was something like 12 titles that released on both platforms and all but three of them had basically the same performance on both boxes.

"Everybody wants to focus on, you know, there's a frame rate thing going on in Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and, okay, there's a lot of reasons why that could be true but we're weeks in. We just shipped, it's a long generation."

He continued: "I think people who bought an Xbox One are going to be in for an awesome generation of games that are only going to get better, and an awesome generation of experiences. I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in the two experiences which are pretty minor."

It was revealed earlier this week that the PS4 version of Tomb Raider runs at 60fps, with the Xbox One version reported to render at 30fps.

The news also follows shortly after the performance differences seen between the two consoles at launch, which saw major titles Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassin's Creed 4 render at higher resolutions on PS4.

Square told yesterday that it considers anything above 30fps for Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition as "gravy".

Yeah the Android/Apple thing is just as rampant as Xbox/Playstation.

I've not read what MS said about 30/60fps because I've grown tired of the debate and how numbers have become more important than fun/enjoyment.

Is a game fun/enjoyable? Yes? Then I don't care about the technical numbers behind it.

Trust me, there are whole sites dedicated to Android/Apple bashing.

Equally as mad as console wars.

*stands up, applauds, doffs cap*

Round of appluase to Dav for trying to bring this thread back to the issue at hand. Bottom line is that we're barely out of the launch window for both machines, so devs are still testing the boundaries and exploring the capabilities of each, with varying results from title to title. As the quote above demonstrates.

Console fanboyism does amuse me. No-one gets this upset about the brand of trainers they wear, or phone they use.

"iPHONE FOR LIFE lol?! Android Domination etc."

That's annoying if true, sort of expected in the early days of consoles but unlike last gen I think it will get to a point where you don't notice the difference in the third party games.
It will pretty much come down to exclusives in terms of showing off what a console can do, but can see that element in the business becoming very rare in the future.

An interesting few sentences regarding frame rate from the Game Central review:

"The Xbox One never goes above 30 frames per second and occasionally dips below it. The PlayStation 4 though never goes below 30 and sometimes hits a perfect 60, depending on what’s going on.

On the one hand this once again points toward the PlayStation 4 being the more powerful of the two consoles, but that power is not used particularly sensibly here. The effect is subtle but because the frame rate varies more on the PlayStation 4 it actually ends up with more judder than the Xbox One"

Twice as powerful. Is that minor or overblown in its importance. It takes twice as much power to render 60 frames in one second than it does to render 30. That's what we are looking at. It's real and won't go away no matter what MS say.

Not really a wind up, only immature little boys and uneducated casual gamers cannot see the facts that are infront of their very own eyes.
One machine is more powerful and better than the other. This disparity will not change throughout the generation, unless Microsoft decide to upgrade their next version of the xbox one, which seems very unlikely.
Enjoy your inferior purchase. As I will enjoy my superior one.

Page does not exist, but clearly made by a Microsoft fanboy. The ps4 is the greater machine, and I love how you xboxers are trying to justify your purchase when many games clearly look better on the more powerful machine.
LMAO playstation domination.
