Tom Clancy's The Division, an online open-world action RPG for Xbox One and PS4 will be released in 2014, Ubisoft has announced.

Massive Entertainment, the studio behind World in Conflict, is handling development.

The Division takes place in New York three weeks after a lethal virus, released on Black Friday, swept through the city causing society to collapse. The President invokes Presidential Directive 51, and The Division, a top-secret unit of self-supporting tactical agents, is activated. Division agents are trained to operate independently of command in this type of emergency situation.

From Central Park to the subway to the Statue of Liberty, nowhere is safe. Discover a persistent, online, open-world New York where exploration, combat, and RPG player-progression are essential.

"Our goal with Tom Clancy's The Division is nothing short of completely changing the way people play online RPGs," said Fredrik Rundqvist, executive producer, Ubisoft. "With the power of next-gen consoles behind it, The Division puts players in the middle of breathtaking, persistent multiplayer thriller in which they will explore, fight and work together as modern society collapses around you, all with the authenticity for which Tom Clancy games are renowned."

There was definitely a marked difference between the voices of the 'players' and the policemen in the station. You could tell the policeman was an AI for sure. The player's may have been scripted, but I think they were real people in some fashion.

That looks brilliant, is it just me or is it difficult to tell if the other team members are real players playing co-op or the AI team mates? They sound and act just like a friend would to be fair...

I'll be torn between this and Destiny, both looked fantastic in terms of what I like doing in games.

Game of the show for me. This is Next Gen just looks so awesome. Not just the look but from what I've heard of the story to.

@Endless this is why I quite PC gaming just to expensive to keep it up to date. One price and monthly sub for console but at least you know you can run games.

This is easily my game of the show so far and it's not even really started yet! I see this is as a tactical borderlands MMO. My only issue now is i'm pretty sure my PC wont run this or any of the new big titles at the level they're being shown. Despite me building it within the last 6 months and paying over £700 for the parts.

It's definitely a wake up call for m. I was all ready to simply stick to PC gaming because I knew stuff would look just as good on what I have but at a fraction of the price and without all the woohaa with licencing etc etc. Now: I'm really not sure. But I am mostly sure I still cant afford a Xbox One or PS4 even if I decided I wanted one.

Looks pretty darn cool. How much of a role does Tom Clancy actually have with these games?
