One of Fumito Ueda’s original goals for The Last Guardian was to “create something good in a short period of time”, he has revealed, admitting that the game’s lengthy delays were “completely unexpected”.

Talking to IGN, the creative director explained that he thought previous games Ico and Shadow of the Colossus “took a long time to develop… so one of the missions of The Last Guardian was that we wanted to create something good in a short period of time, so the fact that it took a long time to develop was completely unexpected for me.”

The Last Guardian was initially revealed as a PS3 title back in 2009 before suffering a major setback, with Sony’s head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida later admitting that the game had “lots of technical issues”. He also admitted that the initial PS3 trailer was doctored to make it “run smoothly”.

It was re-revealed last June, where it was confirmed to have made the jump to PS4.

“It would be nice to talk about all the struggles we’ve been through,” Ueda continued to IGN, “but there’s a lot of things that we can’t say yet.”

“I’ve never been on a game that has taken so long to develop,” he said earlier in the interview, “so a part of me feels sad but a part of me feels like I just want to complete it. I have mixed feelings.”

The Last Guardian is officially due for release later this year, with Ueda and the team at Studio Japan “working very hard to release the game by the end of the year”.

A release date could be announced at E3 later this month.
