Activision has announced Skylanders Imaginators, the latest game in the toys-to-life franchise heading to PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U on October 14.

Developed by original creators Toys For Bob, this year’s game introduces the option for players to create their own digital Skylander using physical Creation Crystals.

Players will be able to customise their hero’s appearance, abilities, name, theme tune and catchphrase before storing them inside the crystal, although only one character can reportedly be stored in each crystal. If you wish to store more than one you’ll need to purchase additional crystals, although you’ll be free to edit your Skylander – or create an entirely new one – at any time.

A limited number of players will also get the opportunity to turn their in-game characters into real-life toys via 3D-printing, although Activision has yet to offer any details as to how or who will be invited.

The game also introduces a range of new ‘Sensei’ figures, each of which are split into 10 different classes, including Knight, Sorcerer, Bowslinger and Brawler. Two are included in the game’s Starter Pack, including new Penguin Skylander Master King Pen and Golden Queen. You’ll also get a single Imaginite Creation Crystal and a portal.

Senseis can be used to unlock new Imaginator weapons and gain access to bonus areas. 31 will be available in total, although all 300+ existing Skylanders remain compatible with the game. Activision is also “exploring the functionality of vehicles” introduced with last year’s Skylanders Superchargers, saying that at the very least players will be able to “race in-game with previous vehicles on all 12 tracks” from last year’s title.

Unlike Superchargers, however, a digital Starter Pack will not be available for those who already own a portal.

“Since we launched the very first Skylanders game, we have received countless letters and drawings from kids all over the world sharing their vision for their own Skylanders,” said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. “No matter how in touch with our ‘inner kids’ we might think we are as adults, nothing comes close to the endless creativity that springs from the mind of an inspired kid. We’ve turned this year’s game into the ultimate blank canvas for kids’ imaginations so they can create and play their own Skylanders.”

Prices for the Skylanders Imaginators Starter Packs or the Creation Crystals have yet to be announced.
