The North American ratings board, the ESRB, has revealed new details on Resident Evil 7, confirming that the game sees players taking on the role of Ethan, “a man searching for his wife in a derelict mansion”.

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW

According to the description, players will get to use pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws “to kill mutant creatures”, with the ESRB going into detail on some of the gory sequences depicted during the game’s cutscenes.

“As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence,” it says. “A character’s arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man’s leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera.”

Combat is accompanied by “realistic gunfire”, the description adds, along with “screams of pain” and “exaggerated blood-splatter effects”.

Resident Evil 7’s story has largely been kept in secret following its reveal back in June, with the playable demo available on PlayStation 4 said to be a standalone experience from the main game.

The full game is due to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC in January.
