Those creating Resident Evil 7 were aware of the extra intensity horror experiences can create when played in virtual reality, and as such make the game too scary.

Asked on Capcom-Unity if the team was concerned about making the game too scary, game director Kōshi Nakanishi laughed then said: “You take responsibility if you choose to play in PSVR Mode. Whether you think you’re ready for it or not is up to you to decide.

“We certainly did have feelings at some points where we thought it was possible to push it too far in VR with horror.”

Nakanishi also explained that the team has to “optimise the [VR] experience to make it comfortable and as immersive as possible,” though the “game itself is the same” no matter what system you play on.

Producer Masachika Kawata also believes “VR is a really good match for horror”.

He added: “When we first got it implemented we were all so excited to try it out, put on the headset, and get into the horror experience. You have to try it out for yourself to figure out how immersive it is and how you feel like you’re right there in the room.”
