The PS4 and PC versions of No Man’s Sky run on two different servers and are not linked together, creator Sean Murray has confirmed. That means you won’t encounter planets and species named by PS4 players in the PC version, for example, or vice versa.

“PS4 and PC players are using two different servers,” Murray said on Reddit last night. “We are running a control experiment to see who names things the most juvenile things… Let the games begin!”

No Man’s Sky lets players name planets and species they discover before they become unified in a central database shared with others. It isn’t yet clear, however, whether players are technically able to bump into each other.

Last night, Murray tweeted: “To be super clear – No Man’s Sky is not a multiplayer game. Please don’t go in looking for that experience.

“The chances of two players ever crossing paths in a universe this large is pretty much zero. We do have some online features and easter eggs so people can know they are playing in the same universe. It’s about cool ‘moments'”.

No Man’s Sky launches on PS4 in North America today and in the UK tomorrow. A PC version is due to follow this Friday, but it might not be available until fairly late in the day…
