Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is the UK’s new No.1 video game, easily outpacing new release rival Mad Max.

MGS5 earns Konami its first number one spot of the year – which it will hope to shortly follow with PES 2016. The game has also set a new week one sales record for the franchise, beating Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty by a touch under 37 per cent.

Whilst a franchise best performer, the long-awaited and possible final Metal Gear from creator Hideo Kojima is actually only this year’s third fastest-selling game, with week one sales behind Batman: Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3.

In terms of platform choice, PS4 dominated with 72 per cent of total sales, leaving Xbox One with 22 per cent, PS3 with three per cent and Xbox 360 just two per cent.

Mad Max was the week’s other major new release, but was always destined for second spot when going up against Metal Gear Solid 5. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is demoted to third spot, with Sony’s Until Dawn also dropping two places to fourth. Disney Infinity 3.0 takes fifth.

Elsewhere, Koch Media’s Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Curse charts at No.35 thanks to its launch on PS4 and Xbox One, whilst Rugby World Cup 2015 just about makes the chart at No.39. Big Ben Interactive will hope the start of the tournament will help the game perform better in the coming weeks.

A price drop across retailers along with a new advertising push also helped push Bandai Namco’s Project CARS up from No.40 to No.14.
