NetherRealm plans to take a “more aggressive” approach to DLC in Injustice 2 than it has in its previous games, creative director Ed Boon has said, suggesting that the game could receive just shy of a dozen DLC characters.

“One of the things we’ve been doing, trying to do more and more with every game… is to support it for a longer period of time,” Boon explained to IGN. “With DLC characters, we’ve had four with Mortal Kombat, six with Injustice, eight with Mortal Kombat X, and with Injustice 2 we plan on continuing that pattern.”

He continued: “It will certainly be more aggressive than we’ve been in the past.”

Mortal Kombat X featured two Season Passes – titled ‘Kombat Packs’ – which each introduced four new characters and additional skin packs. It was criticised by some, however, for its use of microtransactions, which let players purchase tokens to pull off easy fatalities, rather than enter challenging button combos.

Neither NetherRealm or Warner Bros have yet said what they intend to release as DLC for Injustice 2. However, IGN speculates that the developer could implement a “pay-to-unlock” system that lets players purchase new gear to customise their character.

Injustice 2 launches on PS4 and Xbox One in 2017.
