PlayStation 4 owners can now download the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn client ahead of this weekend's beta test.

The 11GB client can be downloaded directly from the PlayStation Store, or queued from the Sony Entertainment Network website.

Phase 1 of the beta kicks off this Saturday, February 22, until Monday, March 3, giving players the chance to check out the game for free and level up their character to level 20.

Be warned, though, that progress will not be carried over to the full game once the beta ends.

The PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn launches in full this April, with PS3 players able to migrate their progress over to the next-gen version free of charge. The PS4 game includes support for full 1080p and PS Vita Remote Play, plus mouse, keyboard and touchpad support.

"first off the PS2 couldn't handle an mmo"

Final Fantasy XI says hi (still being supported, to. Most recent expansion pack was released for it a year ago... in Japan).

That said, justerthought obviously has no idea what he's on about (it's quite clear he has never played the game).

Wait wait, did you play the game or just watch the trailer and add FFVII as a reference thinking none of us knew better?
yes VII was a great game and genre-defining but still, big blocky heads.
While XIV did have bugs pos-re-awakening they are being fixed and the game is optimal even on my old laptop so nearly everyone can play it from PC to PS3, than plus the fact that it's WAAAY cheaper than other MMOs, and it's next-gen due to the FEATURES and the fact it's running as close as a PC with a good graphic card can run, so go play in your PS2 or PS1, or even XBOX1 cause apparently you are just some microsoft fanboy here to killjoy

Okay... first off the PS2 couldn't handle an mmo let alone an mmo that looks like this. you obviously don't know what you are talking about... there are obviously graphics limitations when a game is an mmo, but this is still going above and beyond what any mmo has done graphically to date. Also the battle system is completely live like WoW. And if the series hasn't moved an inch, than why is the next release going to also have an active battle system and I didn't know you could play Final Fantasy 7 with thousands of other players

Is this a beta of a new next gen game or a crap remastered old one.

Out of interest I viewed the beta trailer video and was totally unimpressed. Final Fantasy hasn't moved on from the excellent FFVII. For a next gen PS4 game, the graphics are just bland flat shaded textures and flat lifeless lighting. Definitely not next gen. More like PS2. The world was a little more detailed but it had that gooey flat shaded look.

The battles drag you out of the game world and are still played out in a weird circular arena with the big dude standing in the middle with lots of sparky flashy stuff flying everywhere. They were made like that in the past due to the limitations of the hardware at the time, so why is it still the same. The series has remained the same and not budged an inch. A dinosaur. I expected a lot more.

It is there, it's just that the PS4 Store is garbage. If you search, it wont show, if you browse all games.. it wont show. BUT if you go to the Welcome section and keep scrolling right, you will see it.
The Store needs a section labeled 'LATEST ADDITIONS' or something.

This isn't entirely true, there are two phases of the beta for PS4. One where you will lose character data, and one where you'll be able to keep it.
