Destiny's 6-player raids can only be played with people on your PSN or Xbox Live friends lists, and will not support matchmaking to join up with strangers, Bungie has revealed.

In an interview with IGN, writer Luke Smith discussed the decision and admitted that the lack of matchmaking is "a bit of a risk. Because the activity requires you to have a group of five other friends to play with."

Raids will offer a stiffer challenge than the rest of the game, with players required to communicate in order to succeed.

"The activity is going to take you and your group of five buddies into a place that you’ve never been," he adds. "A place that you will return to frequently. And [it will] demand of you things you've never even really been asked to do in a shooter before."

Destiny will launch on September 9 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

I've been in an extensive argument on the bungie.net forums about this.

I'd say it's currently sitting at about 65% in favour of Matchmaking, 25% against and 10% indifferent.

I'm pro-matchmaking btw.

That makes more sense. The original IGN article it makes that clear.

But yeah. It doesn't sound great but I've liked their vision so far so I'm hoping it will make sense when we can see all the pieces.

@Sarabin, those are strikes. They will remain the same, including matchmaking. These raids, which weren't in the beta, will only allow friends.

I think it's a bad idea.

Disappointing. Why no matchmaking?

Well that gives me pause. Doesn't sound like a great idea, if they are balanced for six people and I can't wrangle up 5 friends that's not going to be a lot of fun.

Plus the one in the beta had matchmaking, why would you take that away.
