Dark Souls 3 will be the last game in the series developed by From Software – at least for the foreseeable future, president Hidetaka Miyazaki has said.

Speaking to Polygon, Miyazaki explained that it is “time to move away from the Dark Souls franchise. As president of From Software, I’m not completely denying the possibility of bringing back the franchise in the future. There could be someone else in my company who wants to work on new instalments. But we believe that the series will end after the two [Dark Souls 3] DLC.”

While the series could return in the future, Miyazaki’s comments appear to conflict with what he told VideoGamer.com at E3 2015, when he explained that the game would not be “the final game for the Dark Souls series”. One day earlier, a marketing exec at publisher Bandai Namco described the game as the “final episode” in the series.

Remasters of earlier Souls games aren’t off the cards, though, Polygon reports Miyazaki as saying, nor is a new IP that builds upon the ideas established by the franchise. Details on what that could be, however, have yet to be revealed.

Dark Souls 3’s first DLC pack, Ashes of Ariandel, launches on October 25, with a second, final DLC pack due to launch early next year.
