Ubisoft has formally announced Child of Light, the downloadable "playable poem" revealed during last month's GDC, offering further details on the upcoming RPG and confirming a release date and platforms.

Due for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2014, Child of Light sees players taking on the role of Aurora, a young princess who embarks on a quest through the kingdom of Lemuria to recapture the three sources of light, defeat the Black Queen and restore the kingdom.

Players will encounter enemies in the form of wolves and dragons, and meet friendly gnomes and fairies. A co-op partner is also able to control Lemuria's firefly friend.

It also appears to borrow quite heavily from Final Fantasy, implementing an Active Time Battle System for its turn based-battles.

The game is headed up by Ubisoft Montreal's Patrick Plourde, who previously served as creative director on Far Cry 3 and worked on the Assassin's Creed series.

A price for the game has yet to be confirmed.

This game looks utterly charming. I've never heard of it before, but I am already sold on it.

Is this running on the Rayman engine?

Edit: Yup, it's the Ubiart Framework thing. Looking forward to more games using this engine.
