Batman: Arkham Knight will not include a multiplayer mode, Rocksteady has confirmed, despite a bespoke online component having already been created for last year's Batman: Arkham Origins.

Discussing the next-gen title in this month's issue of Game Informer, game director Sefton Hill explained that Arkham Knight "is a single-player game. There is no multiplayer.

"Right at the start this was our vision," he continued. "It's going to take all of our effort for all of this time. We don’t have the time to do multiplayer. We want to focus on making the best single-player experience we can.

"We don't feel that it needs a multiplayer element. Warner Bros. backed that up right at the start."

Batman: Arkham Origins' multiplayer mode was outsourced to UK multiplayer experts Splash Damage, who had previously developed online shooters Brink and Enemy Territory.

Batman: Arkham Knight was announced earlier today and sees Batman return to Gotham City for an "explosive finale" to the Arkham series.

The game is due out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC later this year.

Great news! This game is getting better and better. Arkham is all about the single player experience and this news will only make it a better one.

Considering how nobody was playing the Origins multiplayer about two weeks after launch when I tried it, that makes perfect sense.

Good. Not every game needs multiplayer.
