If Devil May Cry 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 aren't enough for you in 2008, fear no more. SouthPeak Games has announced X-Blades, a new hack-and-slash for next-gen consoles and PC. The game features an anime-style heroine who must use guns, blades, and magic to battle through numerous locations.

"The unique anime-style backdrop combined with high-octane, multi-discipline combat gameplay really pushes X-Blades into brand new territory," said Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak Games. "The 3rd-person 'hack-em-up' genre needs a fresh perspective and X-Blades is poised to deliver it."

According to SouthPeak X-Blades will feature a cinematic style, beautiful animation and high-speed gameplay, mainly thanks to female lead Ayumi.

"We are big fans of anime and that was really our inspiration for X-Blades," said James Seaman, Managing Director at Topware Interactive. "Our goal was to create stylistic characters and artwork and to mix that bombastic visual style with lightning fast action. The result is a killer title that gamers and animation fans won't be able to put down."

Developer Topware Interactive is most well known for commercially successful but critically panned RPG Two Worlds. Hopefully X-Blades will turn out a little better when it arrives late this year.

I'm not sure how much involvement Topware Interactive and Southpeak have in developing this one, I think they're just publishers, one covering U.S. region and one covering PAL territories. Gaijin Entertainment seem to be the developer involved, a Russian based company for whom this is the first foray onto the 360.

So whereas Two Worlds was mostly developed by Reality Pump and published by Topware/Southpeak, X-Blades seems to be a totally different IP. I just hope the publishers set the bar a little higher this time regarding what they consider 'finished' product before they're happy to unleash it on the market.
