WipEout HD Features

For:PS3 Release Date: 24 September 2008

Who comes out on top in this week's DLC round-up?

The console war is fought everywhere these days, but the internet seems to be where people are most vocal. It also serves to give each console its own set of downloadable content, fuelling the war even more. Each week we'll give you a run-down of what's available to download on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, and declare a winner.

Note: This round-up is based on UK releases to each console's online service and does not include premium video content. Releases outside of the UK could vary.

PlayStation 3 - PSN

It's something of a dream week for PS3 owners and the PSN. The big hitter is undoubtedly WipEout HD, a game we awarded a well deserved 9/10. With eight tracks, two-player split-screen, eight-player online support, custom soundtracks and trophies it's a game every PS3 owner should own. At only £11.99 you've got no excuse not to buy it.

Also available this week is Capcom's Mega Man 9, a game that's so hard it'll make you question your own gaming abilities. We're not joking when we say we struggled to get past the first level, but if you're keen to experience a new game that's been designed with an 8-bit mentality it's worth every penny of its £6.99 price tag. PS3 owners can also buy Criterion's excellent Burnout Paradise for £24.99. We're not sure it's the best value, seeing as you can buy it at retail for around the same price and own a physical copy, but perhaps you're paying for the convenience of not having to insert the game disc.

If you're after free content there are demos for Mega Man 9, Mercenaries 2 and Beijing 2008, an assortment of videos and a handful of themes. Also available this is a video game quiz for Buzz! And a bunch of new songs for Rock Band.

The PS3 content is indeed excellent and wins hands down. However, as a PS3 and Wii owner, I have to question the treatment of the little white box. Yes three WiiWare titles are available but what about the content available on the Nintendo Channel? Trailers, interviews and adverts as well as downloadable DS games that are beamed straight to the handheld. Virtual Console releases?

Let's be fair.

Another thing to mention is that a lot of games (including this new WipeOut HD) on PSN can be shared/traded. I traded a friend WipeOut HD for Jeopardy. Game Sharing beats out the other two handily.
