Warhawk Features

For:PS3 Release Date: 29 August 2007

A round-up of the juiciest rumours being talked about across the internet.

Welcome to the Rumour mill, VideoGamer.com's run-down of the big rumours currently doing the rounds in the video game industry. Every week we'll hunt down the juiciest stories and give our opinion on how legit they are. So, whether you want the ridiculous or the plausible, read on.

Greatest hits range coming to PS3

The Rumour: Sony will release a Greatest Hits range of PlayStation 3 games in the near future, starting with Resistance, Warhawk and Motorstorm.

Verdict: As far as rumours go this one is a bit dull, but also highly probable. Box arts for Japanese Greatest Hits releases have already appeared online, so it's highly likely that we'll see them in the US and PAL territories too. If you want some cheaper PS3 games, you'll be getting them soon.

Plausibility rating: 5/5

MS approaching other devs about Halo

The Rumour: Microsoft wants more Halo games, that much is obvious. While another Halo from Bungie will probably happen in the future, Microsoft is also talking to other developers about extending the Halo franchise.

Verdict: This makes perfect sense. Halo is Microsoft's cash cow and milking it makes business sense. The Halo games are already being developed outside of Bungie (Ensemble is handling Halo RTS Halo Wars and Wingnut Interactive is working on another Halo game) and if Microsoft wants more regular games they're going to have to farm the franchise out further. Activision has had great success with its Call of Duty model, with Infinity Ward and Treyarch taking turns with development, and there's no reason this couldn't work for MS.

Plausibility rating: 3/5

Dead Rising 2 not by Capcom

The Rumour: A sequel to smash hit Xbox 360 game is in the works but it's not being developed by Capcom, with the Japanese publisher farming out work to an external studio.

Verdict: A sequel to Dead Rising seems highly likely. The original game sold remarkably well on the Xbox 360 at a time when the console was still relatively new, so a multi-format follow-up makes sense. What might also make sense for Capcom is handing the game to an external developer. Currently in development for Capcom are Bionic Commando (handled by Grin) and Dark Void (handled by Airtight Games), so a third handled by an external dev isn't out of the question.

Plausibility rating: 3/5

Remodelled PS3 coming in the autumn

ps3 final hardware 11 -

The Rumour: In the same way the PS2 and PSP received redesigns, the PS3 is to get the same treatment. The so called Slim and Lite PS3 will be launched in the autumn this year and be approximately half the PS3's size.

Verdict: A redesigned PlayStation 3 is a dead cert to happen at some point in the future, but we think this year is a little too soon. We're going to put a date of late 2009 as the earliest we'll see this new model, although we'd love to be proven wrong.

Plausibility rating: 2/5

Looking forward to DR2, must get the original first though, smaller PS3 is inevitable but like you said too soon.

This is a pretty good feature - though a little lacking in content this week. It's ok, can't come hard at it every week. Anyway, your rumors are incorporated into the PLAYSTATION Network Rumor Mill on the PS3 Forums.
