A new set of tools available to third-parties will enable devs to get more out of the PS3.

Speaking to ThreeSpeech, Richard Lemarchand, co-lead game designer on Uncharted, has revealed that Naughty Dog is "probably only using 30 or 40% of the power of the PS3 right now".

This comes as music to the ears of PS3 fans who've been regularly fed info from Sony that the console will be on the market for ten years. With so much untapped potential it looks like we can expect lots of exciting new games over the coming years.

This potential should also be easier for all developers, not just those closest to Sony, to tap thanks to a new Naughty Dog developed tool set called Edge.

"There's a set of tools called Edge that were developed on the Naughty Dog premises, actually, by a group of very, very senior games programmer, some from Naughty Dog and some from elsewhere. I think it's tremendously visionary of Sony to make these tools, which are largely low-level libraries," explained Lemarchand.

He continued: "That's why we think we're probably only using 30 or 40 per cent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there's this great, untapped potential. All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years."

I agree, I love the PS3 and could you Imagine a game or a devloper using 100% of the PS3's power?!

And the Cell hype train continues.

It amazes me that people think how good a game is depends on how much of "Cell" is being utilised (or some other meaningless, hardware specific rubbish). Graphics, yes, gameplay, no. At this point in the game "immersion" is far more (massively more) about design than FLOPS.

It also amazes me that idiots still talk about "lazy programmers" when anyone that actually follows the games industry in any remotely meaningful sense knows that time and money are the only real issues. I wonder how many of the idiots that talk about "lazy programmers" have ever done 20 hours unpaid overtime for weeks on end?

None of them I'll bet.

yes, there is tons of untapped potential.
we'll have to wait for developers to move past the 360 and the current processor models for the pc before we see what is there.

i hear the word 'simulation' with regards to the cel processor and i think....what can be simulated?
physics and gravity....environment effects...water....fire....organic growth....environmental interactions and destruction....artificial intelligence...sonic environments....character interaction.....object separation.....

i imagine we'll see some astoundingly immersive titles.

yessir, just have to wait for all them lazy game programmers who currently lean on their old-tech game engines like old oak crutches.....

even the new game engines are just a start on the ps3. it's the other consoles (360 and wii) that are holding it back.
