The prospect of an Uncharted movie is scary, but at least it is in good hands, believes Uncharted 3 game director Justin Richmond.
Asked about the movie and the idea of another actor taking on the role of Nathan Drake - a character brought to life fantastically by Nolan North - Richmond said: "It's nerve-wracking. Any time the franchise leaves the house, it's always nerve-wracking. But Neil Burger - the new director who's on board, and who's actually writing the script as well - he met with Amy at Comic-Con. They met, and she sort of gave him the info-dump and gave him the Bible, and all that stuff. I think he's going to be a great partner.
"They seemed to really hit it off; she said he really understood the franchise, and understood what we were trying to do with it. And the other thing is, it would be really great to have somebody else, another great creative force, do something that we can't do. Hollywood knows how to make movies, right? We don't know how to make movies, we know how to make games."
But video game movies tend to be pretty bad, what makes this any different?
"Everybody is aware of that issue," said Richmond. "But I think if anybody can do it, this guy is one of the guys that can do it. If you watch Limitless, if you watch The Illusionist, he totally understands plot tension and characters, and that's what's important to Uncharted. I think we want someone who's going to come in and put their own take on the franchise. We don't someone to come in and just make Uncharted 1 again; we already did that, that's a waste of everybody's time."
He added: "I'm really hopeful, I think it could be great. Who knows, though? It's been in development forever, Hollywood is a totally different beast. We make these things in two years, guaranteed, and they have a totally different timeframe. So we'll see what happens."
The role of Nathan Drake is still to be cast, but Richmond says they are pretty big shoes to fill.
"It's cool that people say that. It's cool that Nolan has put such a stamp on this character that people would say that they're big shoes to fill," he concluded.
In the same interview, Richmond told VideoGamer.com that Uncharted could well continue onto PlayStation 4.
Uncharted 3 is scheduled for release November 2, 2011. The movie is still in the very early stages of production.
