Naughty Dog's new IP pinned for release weeks ahead of expected next-gen announcement.

The Last of Us will release on May 7, 2013, Naughty Dog has announced.

The release date for Naughty Dog's new IP was revealed during a trailer shown at last night's VGAs, in which we see more of the ghoulish infected Joel and Ellie will have to face on their journey, and a few teasing shots of other survivors you'll meet along the way.

Of course, it's worth pointing out that May 7 is a Tuesday, so unless Sony is planning on a global release, expect a UK launch to follow a few days later.

The release date pins the game for release just weeks ahead of next year's E3 Expo, where many expect Sony to lift the lid on its next-generation PlayStation.

Will The Last of Us be PlayStation 3's last hurrah? Or will GTA 5 follow soon after? Expect more info on both in the months to come.

Agreed. I'll need something to do while everybody else is inevitably harping on about how good GTAV is.

Not a good time for a PS3 exclusive that's unappealing to the core to be released around the same time as GTA V. I hope they delay it so that we ND gets a profit and creates more new IPs.

Nice to have a release date. Now i just gotta hope i got the funds for both this and GTAV otherwise The Last of Us will have to take a back seat. Nothing is gonna stand in the way of me and GTAV.

Probably best to get it out before E3 with all the buzz around next gen consoles, but a week before the expected release of GTAV will no doubt hurt it sales abit; I'm more excited for this than any other game next year (except maybe Ni No Kuni).
