The next-generation may be right around the corner, but Sony has reassured users that it is "going to continue supporting [PlayStation 3] for the next few years," and that the console has an "incredible lineup" of games scheduled over the "next 2-3 years".

"We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely," SCEA's VP of hardware marketing John Koller told GameSpot. "And we're going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot.

"And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming. Same thing with PS2…it's kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there's still games launching for it."

Some of those games include Naughty Dog's end-of-the-world action-adventure The Last Of Us, David Cage's Beyond: Two Souls and a new game in the God of War series. Each of them are due to launch next year.

But Sony says that there's even more "great content" planned for beyond 2013.

"A lot of great content is coming," Koller added. "And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup. That consumer coming in this fall is going to really have an opportunity to have great content and what we believe to be the best content in the industry. Yeah, we watch what the competitors do, but we don't make decisions based on what they do. We like our position."

Sony announced the new 'Super Slim' PlayStation 3 earlier this week. The model is 25 per cent smaller than the existing Slim PS3 and features a top-loading disc mechanism.

A 500GB version launches in the UK next Friday. For a closer look at the new console, take a look at our unboxing video.
