A sequel to the mostly excellent FPS The Darkness is still very much on the cards, comic book company Top Cow Productions told Joystiq at the New York Comic Con over the weekend.

Quizzed on the subject of The Darkness 2, sales and marketing director Atom! Freeman said: "There are certain rights issues that we needed to clear up in order to move ahead with The Darkness 2. Those are getting cleared up. While there are no specific plans, it is definitely ... still on all of our minds."

Pushed further on the subject, he added: "We loved the game. The fans loved the game. There's no reason to not do another one. Just making sure that all of our ducks are in a row so that we can begin that process."

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Rumours of a sequel to The Darkness go back to Comic Con 2008 and it's been regularly popping up for air ever since. Earlier this year The Darkness 2 showed up on the CV of Digital Extremes texture artist Emmanuel Pappas, indicating the Canadian studio is working on the follow-up to 2K's comic book action title. The first game was created by Starbreeze, but the studio ruled itself out of development duties for the sequel last year. Digital Extremes, on the other hand, has already worked with 2K on BioShock 2.

The Darkness was awesome, but I never got round to finishing it.

I found a way of breaking the game in such a way that I couldn't progress. I restarted it it, but really should finish it sometime.

Mike Patton is brilliant full stop!

I only ever played the demo and from memory it was very interesting.

Could be a cheap purchase. Why do you tempt me so?

Shame that you gave in - the further in you got the better it became - like Clockpunk I thought this game was vastly underrated, great twists in the story too (even if you'd read the comics)
Show Spoiler never saw Jenny dying coming at all

Fantastic voice acting too - Mike Patton was brilliant as the voice of the Darkness!

I know it sounds bad but i found it horribly challenging, which took all the fun element away. I stopped playing a couple of missions in.

Damn - I hoped this was in the cards for a release sooner than this suggests - The Darkness is a criminally underappreciated gem. A little tricky, and a little surreal in the nightmarish bits, but always fantastic.

I remember a couple of years ago, the devs had an open call for graffiti artist's to have their work featured in the sequel, didn't they? As was the case for the first game.

The manner in which the game made itself 'semi-open world' was very good.

In fact, think I might start it up again later today, seeing as it *is* October... ;) I can recommend anyone who hasn't to give it a try!
