Says no PC version of upcoming Star Wars game was a 'difficult decision'. 'Understands PC gamer concerns'.
Cameron Suey, producer of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of upcoming Star Wars game The Force Unleashed, has said he understands the concerns of PC gamers left in the cold by developer LucasArts' decision not to release the game on that platform.
LucasArts suffered a torrent of abuse from PC gamers following our May 2008 interview with Suey, where he explained that the reason the developer wasn't releasing a PC version was because of the difficulty of scaling the game so that it was playable on PCs of varied power. The interview currently has four pages of comments, most of which are negative towards the move and the reasoning behind it.
When we caught up with Suey at Leipzig Games Convention last month, we asked him how he felt about the overwhelmingly negative response to his explanation for the move.
He said: "Wow. OK that's interesting. Obviously the reason I'm doing this and the reason I think any of us is doing this is because we love games and we want to make games for people who love games. So any time someone's not happy with something, I won't say it's difficult because you have to deal with it, but we would totally prefer everybody to be as happy as possible, you know we want to make everybody as happy as possible.
"In this case, it just really wasn't feasible. As much as I really understand everybody's concerns and I really understand that people want to play the game on their platform of choice, the truth of it is, the way this game is designed, based around these physics, that are simulation based and very procedural, it would take a very powerful PC to pull them off. This is definitely stretching the Xbox and the PS3 really to the farthest they can go.
"And yet high-end PCs definitely would be able to do it. Traditionally the way you get a game on multiple PCs is you have to scale the graphics down, right? Unfortunately physics, especially procedural physics, it's impossible to scale it and if you did scale it or turn it off or turn it down it would fundamentally change the way the gameplay works. It would just be too limited for us. It was a difficult decision to make but you can't scale the physics."
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is due out for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP and Nintendo DS on September 19. You can get all the latest trailers, screen shots and hands-on previews over on our game page.

I wonder what spec PC you'd need...
Netmind wrote at 16:24 on 12 September 2008
Once again, thats bullshit.
Screw LucasArts, wont buy any of their games unless they make Battlefront 3 :p
(for PC ofc)
NOW Look at Crysis, probably better gfx then SW:FU, still it has been selling good, and there was always people playing it on Xfire when it was released, and also I've seen alota clans playing it as well, means their PC can RUN IT, cause they dont PLAY it unless they CANT run it.
Now don't come here and say most gaming PCs can't run it.
Probably their LAME excuse cause they're afraid of the piracy going on.
Another example is Farcry 2, graphics didn't stop them making it for PC, they're even making it better graphics for PCs = PREORDERED! UbiSoft ftw.
NOW GET YOUR DAMNED FINGERS OUT AND MAKE ME BATTLEFRONT 3. lol
LucasArts = EPIC FAIL
Now I'm too lazy to read trough this to check for errors, so bare with me lol :p

That's funny because my 2 year old PC (Q6600 + 8800gts) can play every single console port at higher resolutions and better framerates. Yet here we are expected to believe force unleashed is "special".
This is a complete and utter load of bull and I am amazed someone so ignorant has actually managed to get as far as he has in the software industry. But then does explain why the games industry is in such a mess with morons like Cameron Suey in charge.
Tony wrote at 17:55 on 12 September 2008
You people fail to realize the distinction between physics and graphics. Being able to run the graphics at higher resolutions doesn't have anything to do with being able to achieve the same physics fidelity.
Anonymous wrote at 18:04 on 12 September 2008
Tony there is NOTHING special about the physics ability of the consoles. The cpu's both the 360 and PS3 use are heavily stripped to the bone (eqivulent to a Pentium 1 instruction set) in order execution processors. A midrange dualcore is more than a match for the 360/PS3.
This is complete and utter rubbish that Cameron is spewing but hey it seems to be working because you believe him. The consoles are not some sort of mega machine it has been proven time and time again that you can do it much better on a PC.

Uhhh procedural physics, this is the new name of exclusivity! Like FXchip etc...
Dont make me laugh!

Absolute rubbish. Quote "it would take a very powerful PC to pull them off." and yet this game is being made for the PS2, PSP and DS too... nothing more than flashy calculators but powerful enough to run this high-end game.
Most crappy PC games have come out with the ability to scale performance by offering resolution and effect options, even many LucasArts games.
Sounds like the current LucasArts staff have lost the ability to tell the truth.

"screw them lucas *** you jedi balls "
rofl I like that :p
Now someone make LucasFails read these comments.
Adam wrote at 04:40 on 13 September 2008
Bullshit. He doesn't want to say they are sticking with consoles because of PC piracy. PS2, PSP and DS, yea those have really powerful hardware in them like $2000 Quadcore CPU, $2500 in 3-Way Quad-SLI, $600 in memory...and yet the console sells between $100-300 <sarcasm off>. Seriously if a xbox360 costs $400, spend $400 on computer parts and bam, same hardware or better.

Maybe its a good thing that its not released on x86 PC's .
With Irish logic like it cant run on a Computer yet it runs
on a PS2 and a DS , how bad could the game turn out ?
Recently Nvidia released a way for people using Nvidia 8000 cards
to enjoy the physics addon card graphics without getting one
(Since they were overpriced anyway)
I enjoyed one of the Jedi knights games that was on the
PC years ago but the Star Wars one's seem to be
solo single player based without LAN coop and
without Multi Player modes .
Companies that use the same logic that pirating
is huge on the PC and that's the reason for poor
sales I hope go out of business and let in some
new decent companies that are willing to look
at the whole issue of gaming and fix it instead of
blaming the consumer for pirating their buggy half
compete peice of crap game that they don't support
once the sucker (I mean customer) gives the company
the money.
Lots of users are seeing on the x86 PC and even
the latest geneartion of console hardware that
support patching games that
- Games on all platforms are buggy and problematic
(heck you see console games that lock up and the fix
is to reboot the device or leave it off for 20 mins)
- Lack of Duel Split screen on PC Windows Games
- Lack of proper seperate SADS software to host
PC games on Windows/Linux and to host Console
games on PC's (Windows/Linux)
- Lack of coop LAN and coop ONLINE in RPG/RTS/FPS
- Lack of the same style in games , eg GTA/NFS/BF/COD
keep to the same style , eg fun racer , if you want to make a sim game
then start a new spin off series under a new title.
- Recently on PC , lack of Demos displaying what the product will be like
often people PIRATING the games is a way to see what its actually
like before wasting money on something that could turn out to be a waste
of time and cash .
- Cross platform play (without using Games for Live) when is this finaly
going to happen with FPS/Sports/Racing
- Figting games on PC has basicly disapeared , boxing games , teken style
games , you dont see many at all , very rare .
- Lack of ping limiting function for online games (Console and PC) to
block high pingers (over 150 ping) from joining and ruining game play.
No shortage of articles and stories on the net about how Crysis 1
was pirated a lot , sure , but how many people wanted to play
it via LAN COOP mode instead of Single player solo mode
and didnt want to spend wads of cash on upgrading to another
directx video card that wont be able to play the next years games
at full speed
(Lots of gamers are thinking game companies
get kick backs for making the graphics bloated which is why
graphic cards get a huge boost in sales)

I consider x86 old tech now. Been running with a 64-bit OS for the last 3 years (WinXP 64 and Vista 64) and almost all processors today are dual-core 64-bit. You still have the option to use 32-bit OS for old hardware.

Has someone got this Cameron Suey's email address? I would honestly like to email him and ask him what the real reasons are behind this decision because frankly when you're making a game for the DS and PSP platforms and then say that the PC platform doesn't scale well-enough you know that's just a load of utter garbage. How can 'procedural physics' scale so well on a DS but not on a PC?
Please explain this simple 1+1 equation to me, because really that's as simple as this question is.

LIES!!! ALL LIES!!! Sometimes the more obvious the lie the more people will believe it...

I'll think you'll find that that Cameron is the producer for the xbox/ps3 versions, therefore his comments may not transfers over to the ps2/ds/wii versions. These versions may have different physics engines matched to these consoles hardware.
The only problem with the pc as far as I can see it is that everyone has slightly different hardware therefore its not as easy to optimize as a console versions.
Still seems like a lame excuse though.

I smell BS... Most modern pcs will handle this game. Most people who play pc games realize that with new releases hardware requirements change.
This is bullshit.. and i recommend everyone sign the online petition to get this game released to the platform that started it all for Lucass Arts.
Kshock wrote at 06:37 on 15 September 2008
I would have liked to see it on PC, planning on upgrading my desktop when I get some more funds...but I've got a theory on why it isn't coming out on PC.
Most consoles haven't been modded, so being able to change the gameplay is non-existent. Since this story is the 'canon' story, or how it actually played out, LA wouldn't want modders going in and changing up maps. I'll also state that modding when the game has 3 separate physics engines wouldn't be easy. (I bet due able, but it would probably be well outside my limited modding skill).
Next, there is no Multiplayer. Not for the consoles that really matter, anyway. The PS3 and the 360 are the most powerful of the consoles, thus most likely to be what we would see in a PC version of the game, and LA found it in their infinite wisdom to rob them of Multiplayer, while allowing 3rd party companies give their games MP. (Granted, it is limited). I am guessing that the decision to not put in MP was because they didn't want to go through the headache of making the 3 physics engines play nice with another console...just a thought.
Also, DO NOT bring up the DS, Wii, or ps2 versions as a reason that we could easily run it on the computer. Do you seriously want to see their quality (without any of the so called 'revolutionary' physics engines *that are somehow blocking a PC version) ported to the PC?!?!? I would go down to LA and shoot someone if they even tried to pass a ps2 port, with crappy graphics...no new physics engine...and no MP on the PC. Please, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS!!!!!!!
That is my 2 cents worth. I do not believe that a majority of serious PC gamers will have anything but top of the line PCs. (God, a console is cheap enough that if you can't keep your PC up you should switch). Unfortunately, since that market share has gone down, the companies blame it on people pirating the game.
*Please note, I'm not saying that there aren't a lot of PC gamers. WOW goes to prove that there are PC gamers. Out of the dozen or so WOW players i know, only one is a serious PC gamer (I don't really count myself because I broke down and bought a 360 :(...). The goal in PC sales should not be to reach the sales of WOW, it should be to get the game out to people who would enjoy it as it is meant to be enjoyed. (In other words, screw the people who can't play it on PC...they should be used to upgrading or purchasing a console). Sorry for continuing after i felt like i was at a stopping point...got off on a tangent.
