Sonic Unleashed producer says making an HD 2D Sonic might not be viable.
Speaking to Kotaku at the Tokyo Game Show, Akinori Nishiyama, producer on Sonic Unleashed, revealed that while a high definition remake of a classic Sonic title or all-new high definition 2D title might be out of the question, a new title in the style of Mega Man 9 could certainly be on the cards.
"There's always the possibility," said Nishiyama when asked about making a high definition 2D Sonic game. "Whether it would be viable remains to be seen, but having a new game - or even a remake of the GBA games, which we now can't use [thanks to the DSi] - would certainly be possible."
He added: "One of our ideas has been that on older consoles, you may have had only 16 colours. One thing we could do is make a game like Mega Man 9; do a new Sonic, but in an old style."
Would you buy an all-new Sonic game made in the same retro style as Mega Man 9? Let us know in the comments below.

Made with intention of the SEGA Genesis.(so it'd be if romified a .smd or .bin)
Called Sonic 4
Didn't include characters made from Adventure 1 and on... but did include characters that have only made game appearances in Mean Bean Machine (so that'd be Sally and co. and personally i'd like to see sally as a playable character kinda like protoman from what i heard is in MM9)
Stuck to only Super Sonic/Knuckles (yes knuckles and tails'd be playable via events ingame)
And was just overall kickass and had stages that used sonic's speed to the fullest like Chemical Plant Zone in S2 did.
And MAKE ROBOTNIK INTO ROBOTNIK, not some tard named eggman. although some of the comic/show bosses wouldn't be too bad, i wouldn't mind scourge since he techinically is oldschool just with a newschool look.
Other than that have at it. And I'd gladly pay 15-20 for a game like that maybe even 30 if it were to be released on a ps2 disc and had a 2nd game which was basically it but you could create your own characters and levels and share them on the interwebs

A character creator would be nice, and a EASY TO USE level creator. XBL User Created DLC would be the perfect market for such a thing. Yeah sega, put that b**** on the 360!
It needs to have the Level/Act setup, go back to THREE ACTS per level, PLEASE!!! Make them a challange (ala Metropolis Sonic 2), but not so insanely hard that you have to leave the Genesis on pause overnight while you go sleep and burn out your Zenith TV set from Goodwill, ja? (You guys know who you are!)
Robotnik. NOT Eggman. Robotnik.
Tails can fly, and if it's a console release, then Tails should be able to be controlled by the second controller, like in 2 and 3.
Go back to either Sonic 1 OR 2 special stages. 3 and Kunckles, no. Those sucked @$$ CRACK.
Robotnik should go down in 8 hits, just like the old school. Final Robotnik, 13 hits max.
I also like in Sonic 2/Lock with Knuckles the whole "keep your rings" after you go into the special stage. That was a nice feature. But it did make it easy to get Super Knuckles. So here's the compromise: You get the emerald, you keep your rings. You dont get it, you dont keep them!
And for CHRISSAKE!!! HAVE A SUPER TAILS!!! I know he exists, and it's just not fair for Knuckles and Sonic to go super, but not Tails. Tails rocks, get over it.
Bring back his Biplane as well.
Deathegg is donefor.
The Floating Island is safe.
That's for a new game.
Attached to the disk (for it WILL be a disk! Or XBA, ja?) should be the ORIGINAL games (1,2,3, &K, locks with 2 and 3) in the remade graphics, as unlockables.
Do all this, Sega, and Sonic MAY recapture SOME of his former glory.
I would GLADLY pay $30-40 for that junk, if for no other reason than to recapture those long nights, those old days with family and friends. The Days of Yesteryear as it were.
As it stands, I'm still using my Genesis to play the oldschool games. REULARLY. My wife has burned through 3, and I've got 2 myself. I'm still using my FIRST one, granted it's on it's last legs, but hey, after around 18 years, what can I say?
So do this thing, Seag. Make it for 360, PS2/3, and Wii. Have the Level/Character Creator for XBL fileshare/marketplace.
I await with great anticipation!

Sonic adventure on Dreamcast was NOT a bad game, at all. Even though the camera was ****ing things up every now and then...
I'd rather have a 3D Sonic mixed up with some 2D levels. Like they did with Ecco the dolphin on Dreamcast. You following dude?...
Ah yeah!... This should be happenin'!... ;)
