Sony Computer Entertainment has today announced SOCOM: Confrontation, a new entry in the SOCOM video game series designed exclusively for online play on the PlayStation 3.

SOCOM: Confrontation will offer support for online battles of up to 32 players, with full character customisation options available. You'll want to scout the world for the best soldiers in order to strengthen your team as you lead your men against other skilled outfits.

The initial release will be available from the PlayStation Store and on Blu-ray at retail and will include seven maps and five special forces units: United States Navy SEALs, Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom), Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK, Germany), Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain), 1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine (1er RPIMa, France)

Confrontation will also provide full stat tracking through support website socom.com, enabling players to manage their team even when away from a PS3. In addition to stat tracking the website will feature clan management tools, My SOCOM pages and more.

Sony is also promising regular downloads from PlayStation Network, including new Special Forces characters, weapons and maps.

Players will also be able to compete in many tournaments, with events taking place all week on a regional and global basis.

Sony hasn't announced a release date, but it's safe to assume we'll be seeing it later this year.
