The PS3 has the potential to achieve better graphics than the Xbox 360, a Volition developer has told VideoGamer.com.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at THQ's Gamers Day in San Francisco, California, this week, Jeff Carroll, associate producer in charge of multiplayer and PS3 on upcoming third-person action game Red Faction: Guerrilla, said that while developers will struggle with the PS3 at first, once they "figure it out" they will find "a very powerful system underneath".

Red Faction: Guerrilla, the third in the popular series, sees a switch from the FPS view seen in the first two games to a third-person view. Scheduled for a simultaneous Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release in THQ's fiscal year 2009, the game has come on leaps and bounds since its first-look public unveiling earlier in the year.

When asked if there would be any differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, Carroll replied: "We've got the PS3 running at a similar frame rate to the 360. We're finding some of the challenges of the PS3 beneficial. We feel like we're doing rather well with the PS3."

Carroll went into more detail on the benefits of the PS3: "We have been getting the physics system, the Havok system and our own proprietary destruction system running on the SPUs, as well as our animations. We're seeing quite a decent speed improvement now that we've effectively got that running on the SPUs instead of the CPUs."

Carroll agreed, however, that many developers have found the PS3 to be a challenging platform, and admitted that Volition shared that struggle, at first.

"We were like that at the beginning. But I think mainly because we had to get our destruction system running on the SPUs, we had to get it running well in order to succeed, we felt a tremendous pressure right at the beginning to learn as much as we could about the PS3. And our programmers have done a wonderful job."

When asked whether it is possible to achieve better graphics on the PS3 compared with the Xbox 360, Carroll said: "I think potentially you will. I think early on people are going to be struggling to figure out exactly how to make the PS3 work. But I think once they do they will see it's a very powerful system underneath. They both have their advantages. The Xbox 360 pushes polygons rather well, which for us, because everything is destructible, that means that we have a tremendous number of polygons in our game compared to regular games, we see a great benefit with the Xbox 360, but we just learn to optimise in different ways for the PS3."

In Red Faction: Guerrilla, players will be able to destroy every building they see through a combination of weapons, vehicles and explosives. Real world physics are applied to the structures, often leading to a collapse through real-time structural stress.

Carroll added that the game is "very much" pushing the PS3, "both in terms of memory and processing power".

You can see for yourself how Red Faction: Guerrilla is shaping up over at our hands-on preview, and cast your eyeballs over some brand new screens hot off the press.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is due out some time during THQ's 2009 fiscal year for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Some people try to be very loyal fanboy rather than anything else... Don't tell that "I didn't like or want to play any of the PS3 or XBOX360 exclusive games because they are not good or because I am not interested"... Grow up and be a real gamer rather than being the fanboy of any console.. No hardware or software works alone without supplementing each other... If hardware was all, then Nintendo wii would have vanished from the market by now... At the end, it all matters what you like and how you like playing it... Support the game industry by purchasing the games and never play any pirated games... There are huge and huge efforts being put behind the making of each and every game and it is up to us to support them to help them make better games... Enjoy the games... :)

Sounds to me like the same "potential" Sony has been touting for years now. When did blowing the 360 off the map with 4d graphics turn into "We've got the PS3 running at a similar frame rate to the 360"? So far the 360 has the best library and yes I know one day MGS4 and FF13 will come out but frankly I lost interest in MG after 2 sucked ass and FF after 7 so no loss for me but to each their own. Hell I can't wait for Mass Effect 2, 3 GOW2, and a sh*t load more so PS fans enjoy your heavy hitters and I will enjoy MS's. As far as who is the best I see the war ending in a wash and so far the multiplate releases have proved my point.

I think none of the people here actually studied the Cell processor in detail and developed any application on it. Well, I do in both. All I can say is the PS3 does have huge potential, but the optimization of the Cell processor requires conflicting trade-offs - in other words, the actual peak performance is just a small fraction of the posted "theoretical" numbers. Don't buy into the Sony hype on the Cell processor. Sony is known for a lot of BS.

In my opinion, PS3 is a much better hardware than XBOX 360 (but performance is not one of the major factors):
1. More bang for the buck
2. blue-ray
3. reliablity

However, XBOX 360 provides
1. More AAA games in the library so far
2. Great on-line service at little cost
3. Cheaper initial cost

These 2 consoles are about equal; PS3 will probably win out because of the hype about its alleged experience and more exclusive system seller games (despite they are all decade old sequels)

Oh by the time PS3 reaches its potential, the next XBOX will be out and along with XBOX 360, MS will have a deadly 1-2 punch.

I do own both consoles and have a very high GPA in graduate school, so I am not a fan of either one and I am smarter than you.

360 has 1 Chip PS3 has 1 Chip. 360 has 3 cores PS3 has 7 Cores. Top end PC's use 4 Cores and no programs utilise more than 2 cores. Can you see my point? If PC programers can't utilise 4 cores what chance have you got to utilise 7 cores>?

Everyone knows that the polygon argument is spun out of truth by XBox Fanboys. They discount the multi-chipset working in unison. XBox360 is a single chip. If you only count 1 of PS3's chips then yes, XBox is faster. If you live on planet earth, it's not.

PS3 is full of Potential its unlocking the potential thats the problem. I could have been a top flight football player but partying, booze and sex meant my potential was never reached. I talk to game programers quite a bit and this is an anolgy they used.

"Think of an Apple, you want to peal that apple. Mcrosoft provide a sharp kitchen knife/pealer to get that apples skin off and its easy to get it done. Sony provides a fork to do the same job. Although a fork is potentially a better tool. For the job it is doing it has no purpose."

In other words its blinking hard to unleash any potential with the PS3 unless your Sony's own by the seems.

Well would you buy a next gen console if the game dev's were only going to run it at a average setting? I dont think so.

^where did you get those numbers?

Carrol stated that:

"I think potentially you will. I think early on people are going to be struggling to figure out exactly how to make the PS3 work. But I think once they do they will see it's a very powerful system underneath. They both have their advantages. and also she said that the game is "very much" pushing the PS3, "both in terms of memory and processing power".

it seems to me that PS3 is working harder to run the game than Xbox360 (cmiiw)
