Understands innovation is important to critics, but feels 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'.

Insomniac, the developer behind the PS3-exclusive Resistance series, has talked openly and candidly about the critical reception to Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, out November 6 exclusively on PS3.

The family friendly action platformer has received excellent review scores so far. Tom gave it an 8/10 in his review, and the game currently enjoys an impressive 83 Metacritic score.

While most reviewers agree A Crack in Time's core gameplay is fun, some have criticised the series for not substantially evolving over the years.

The US developer told us that while it understands such calls for innovation, it feels "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

"Overall I'm seeing what I expected," said senior community manager James Stevenson. "I'm seeing some people be a little bit harsher. I'm seeing some people I thought were going to be really harsh, be really positive."

TJ Fixman, described on his business card as the "Master of the Written Word", told us: "It's funny. We see that in a lot of reviews. They say the gameplay hasn't changed so much but the gameplay is really, really good."

When asked how Insomniac resolves that conflict, Stevenson replied: "I understand it [the call for innovation]. Innovation is important to critics. You guys play so many games. We play a lot of games too. You don't want to play the same thing over and over again. I can understand that.

"It's always hard. Look at the sports games like FIFA and Madden. They can't change their core gameplay so they have to figure out new ways to make it interesting. We are kind of in the same boat. I would almost say there's nothing we can do better. Maybe there is a way we can change things up. We tried with Gladiator. Reviews were not as good - fan reaction definitely not as good. Though, there are also the other people on the other side of that. We always focus on the larger group, but there is definitely a significant group that liked it. They thought it was the best shooting and action of the franchise. They thought it was a great step, and they loved it. Those folks probably would love to see another game like it.

"So there is always that damned if you do, damned if you don't feeling. If you go too far off of your established gameplay, you're not really the next Ratchet & Clank game. You're a side game or something. But on the other hand if you stay too close to it then you get dinged for too much of the same."

Stevenson denied that the release of nine Ratchet & Clank games in seven years is too many, and insisted that making the fans happy and making a profit were "the two critical factors to remaining a long term sustainable business".

"That said," Stevenson continued, "we also are aware that we can't milk it dry. If we keep milking and going back to the same well, and the well goes dry, that's not good for Insomniac with Ratchet & Clank and it's not good for Sony with Ratchet & Clank.

"Nothing will go unnoticed that people say. If people think the game is too samey or whatever, those comments don't necessarily fall on deaf ears. All the feedback we get is definitely considered. But at this point I don't think there are too many Ratchet & Clank games."

I completely understand this guys comments, you cant really win. I loved the last Ratchet and Clank game but for me a game like this is going going to force me to purchase when its cheaper anyway. I dont think R&C should stray too far from a winning formula.

Ratchet & Clank is probably my second - favourite platforming franchise (Behind the untouchable Jak & Daxter). Personally i'm really glad that Insomniac haven't strayed too far away from the core gameplay mechanics. What was fun in the very first Ratchet & Clank is still fun today and will still be fun in 10 years.

Who could ever get tired of riding a rail on your Grind Boots while some kind of giant battleship tries to obliterate you? Or turning your enemies into harmless Penguins and then forcing them to dance while torching them with the Pyrocitor? Or Sucking up smaller enemies to spit out at bigger enemies? Or launching tornados???

Change is bad. As long as the weapons stay fresh and fun and the story progresses significantly there's no harm in this franchise being around for a long, long time.

" Graphics
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is a very pretty game with a nice art style. It might not be as mind-blowing as its photo-realistic peers like Uncharted 2, but it sure is easy on the eyes. " from IGN review of ratchet and clank: a crank in time.

IGN was very agreeable overall to the quality in A Crack in Time, but words like 'Photorealism' , and 'pretty' and 'it sure is easy on the eyes' to me are lack-lustre and miss the point, and the former is a entirely irrelevant label for what I firmly believe we can for example see in movies like 'Wall-e' and 'The Incredibles' , and their huge popularity compare extremely favorably to Insomniac's latest outing .

I would definitely very much rather play this genre of game repleat with visually stunning, platform and puzzle goodness than necessarily photorealism drooling, and continue to be thankful on many levels to insomniac for such high class visual wizardly, and for continuing to provide such high quality family-oriented gaming while giving the action oriented crowd one heck of alot to go WOAH over.

I hope they continue in this vein, and should get top notch accolades for being willing to do it, at the expense of some reviewers , that apparantly just can't see past their must look like real life-FPS mindsets.

That kind of ideology is not innovation, its simply complacency, and I'm thankful I enjoy the type of innovation insomiac and similar game houses are willing to bring us.

ROck on!

See you in the game !

Certian games can only evolve so far........ Innovation is important, but if something isnt broke, don't fix it.

I don't buy this no innovation stuff. The series did acheivements before MS did. They did the spherical worlds that the over rated Galaxy is so lauded for, years before Ninty.I also think that innovation is an unhealthy obsession for much of the games media(Edge,Gamecentral are very guilty).Films and books are not judged by innovation to the same degree and I think Videogamer are very good at not getting caught up on this stuff.I like their reviews because they want what I want...Polished,enjoyable games, that's what matters.I don't need the thrill of the new in every game and I want games to be themselves.Rachet with better graphics, new levels and more of the same buffed to a shine gameplay and I'm very happy.

I have always loved the family friendly core gameplay in this series & as he said fifa & madden have good core gameplay but have no control over the story & have to try to innovate which often goes wrong . Ratchet & Clank has been a family fave for yrs & graphically its improved & the whole story/ universe has evolved whilst the game has in many ways stayed the same but the hey if it ain't broke don't fix it attitude is to be rewarded then this series should get 10's from the judges lol. I have got the collectors edition on pre-order & ACIT is my most anticipated game of the yr .Cpt Qwark FTW

Its very much a problem look at Sonic they have tried new concepts and ideas to revive the series and been majorly panned for it, now they are going back to the 2d side scrolling we all loved and more importantly everyone wanted.

They could do similar with ratchet and ruin it sometimes change isn't always best.

To be honest I really like the Ratchet & Clank games. Sure, if you look at all the games of Ratchet & Clank there is hardly no innovation but with Crack In Time, you have slowtime. New innovation to the gameplay isn't it?

I like these games and I will get Ratchet & Clank but when it becomes cheaper.

Did that comment on the more of the same being a bad thing? Because lets face it, the Ratchet and Clank Gameplay is good, since when can this be a flaw?

As a side note if it had changed would it of sad.

X A bad departure from the norm
