PES 2008 on PS3 is for a next-gen console but it is not a next-gen game. You cannot ignore the fact that, for whatever reason, this is a poor effort from Konami.

I used to tell everyone to ditch FIFA and buy PES.
Well now im doing it the other way around - if you buy this game all you are doing is encouraging Koinami to continue to release second rate rubbish.
Im going to buy FIFA08 and this will be the first PES I have never bought - I pray like EA, Koinamia will realise the need to make a good game to earn our cash - they are just cashing in on the game taking everyone for fools.
On another note - whats with the fanboys? The game is average but even worse unfinished - you can only like this if youve never had a GirlFriend.

lol
The trend continues and the ps3's current history reeks of horrid games and hyped up hardware.
not a total loss with a few ok games.

The flaws are very obvious though, poor presentation, editing, music and the frame rate drops are unforgivable for a console which is supposedly the most powerful games machine on the planet. I downloaded the 360 demo and experienced none of the graphical issues which plague the PS3 version. To me this says that the graphics engine is based on the same version used for the 360 last year and Konami simply haven't put the time and effort in to get it running well on the PS3. The fact that it only really slows down in the replays might be something to do with the fact that it is rendering 80000 little people in the crowd which seems to me to be an idiotic decision by Konami. I'd be much happier if the crowd looked like a blurry 2D texture and the frame rate was at a constant 60fps. All the usual gripes about licenses can be solved with a little editing or waiting for someone to make a good option file. I'm not entirely convinced about the new AI system either. First thing I did was start a world cup with England and five minutes into the first game and AI controlled Campbell had headed the ball into his own net. I've also seen occasions when 3 defenders will follow the ball and leave massive gaps for opposing forwards to get into and easily score from.
Think about all these flaws though and ask yourself, does it affect the way the game plays? Is PES still the most fluid passing system in a football game, the most fun to score spectacular, creative goals with? Do you still get that buzz when Rooney breaks the back of the net with a 20 yard volley. Does it still feel great when Ronaldinho lifts a perfect through ball over the defence for Eto'o to run onto and slide the ball past the oncoming keeper? Will the poor frame make it less satisfying when you make a last ditch counter attack with the score tied, run the length of the field and round the keeper to get the winning goal? Will you not jump off the sofa and do the "I just kicked your ass" dance in your mates face because the crowd celebrating your goal are only made up of 20 pixels? I know my answer to all of those will be yes, expect the dance bit, that's just sad...
The point I'm making is pretty much agreeing with this review, despite the flaws it's still a good game underneath, not as good as it could and should have been but still good. It deserves a score of between 7 and 8 but definitely not 9.2 or .3, whichever it was on IGN. Most of the flaws seem to be laziness on the behalf of Konami and I really hope that this time next year we have a new version written specifically for the PS3 which runs as smooth as it should, has no songs with lyrics about football in and addresses all the other issues that should have been solved before this release.

I 'm afraid it does. You know what I don't understand: If it ain't broken... Why on earth tweak something that does not need tweaking? They boast about A.I., when the new A.I. is for laughs. While you defend with a player, the rest of your team is taking a Sunday walk in the park. It's just ridiculous.

Yes and no. Pasisng may be fluid but scoring no longer makes you stand up. Sorry.. It just doesn't feel like you 've achieved sth great. Go from the sides: you 'll pass through defenders like a charm. Then you 'll either pass it and score, or shoot, the keeper will scramble it and someone will score from the "rebound". That's how 80% of goals are scored in PES2008. No volleys, no long shots and the infamous high through ball: it floats while defenders have the time to step back and ALWAYS head it away.

Personally it wouldn't bother me (almost) at all if the gameplay was what it should be.

Well, that will not happen probably because you CANNOT play a tournament with your friends. You can only play friendlies. That said, I didn't care for the PES5 wide camera bug where stadiums would look empty, let alone the pixelated fans. I don't give a rats ... I just demand a 2008-worthy gameplay. It's been so many years that we ve been talking about the same flaws in that section. It is about time to get them FIXED. Not destroy what 's been fixed already.

I bought the game for the 360 and the problems occur just the same as they do on PS3. The auful slow down rate and crappy "choppy" replays completly upset the fact that i've been a loyal fan of the pro evo series for years. I mean, i actually stopped playing the FIRST Match on the game thinking to myself..."what the hell have konami done??". Everyone who dissagrees with this guy is going to be so dissapointed to see the highlighted facts of this review in the game.......Sorry konami, you've lost a loyal supporter :(

I expected PES2008 to be better than FIFA, as it always has. But this year, forget it.
I heard great things about FIFA 2008 and actually played the game at a friend's house. Beautiful game and true to the real football.
I wont cry for a lost cause and much less be a fanboy, but my money this year is going to EA.

This is one thing that I will miss in this version, things like that are pretty small features that you'd expect wouldn't take much time to implement in the game. When I used to play my mate on PES6 we always used to do the random selection match to make the games fair. It was a great addition to the game and I can't understand why it isn't included in PES2008. I'm just glad there is the potential to fix issues like this with FREE [would be a crime if it wasn't] downloadable content to add extra game modes.
