PES 2008 on PS3 is for a next-gen console but it is not a next-gen game. You cannot ignore the fact that, for whatever reason, this is a poor effort from Konami.

Anyway - my 2 cents - Konami is unwilling to develop for the PS3 early because the PS2 isn't dead yet. There are more people with PS2's than PS3, so the better business decision is to aim at the console that has the most users. The Xbox 360 version was a half assed attempt last year because MS pushed a half finished version into production because they wanted to release at the same time as the PS2 version. This year the game was built from the ground up for the console and they've had more time to get it right. The PS3 version will improve a lot next year but its a pain right now. Regardless of the quality of the game, it will still sell - which isn't right because it starts to send a message to Konami and everywhere else - that half assed games are ok.

yes i agree that it is a travesty that a machine as powerfull as the ps3 should have any problems with the frame rate.
i would still say that this game is the best of the series purely on the fact that the game play is spot on this time, no more end to end basketball style football more patient build ups and controlled play.

i have also heard from another mate that works in a computer game shop that on some tv's the game dont run at all.
there is obviously a split amogst us, some say that it is great, some not.
the only way to solve this is rent a copy for a couple days and make your own opinion.
personally i think that this review was harsh, i would give it 8.3/10 as it still plays like a dream

I played it yesterday. Although there is no sign of a slowdown, I am afraid the gameplay is the same as in PS3. Don't do it, its not worth it.

I will still whoop yo ass at pro though. Maybe not on Fifa, but I'm getting there.

This incarnation in a complete piss take:
1) Frame rate drops during Replays and Pre match walk out are at half rate.
2) Drops in frame rate during the game (Although it seems like it affects some more than others) is criminal and is enhanced further when playing against another Human.
3) Its far too easy to score against the AI on what should be a normal level, which leads to crazy score lines.
4) The keepers are a joke. They flap and punch when not under pressure or just don't move at all on shots which for the most part should not even be attempted. This leads to many goals that are far from textbook and particularly if scored against you a feeling of "Well what could I have done about that?"...NOTHING!
5) Crowd animation was better on a C64 and ruins replays that have it in the background.
6) The On-line play in almost unplayable at the moment and is the most frustrating and infuriating gaming experience on-line on the PS3 I've witnessed so far.
7) The Editing mode as been slashed so even with the DL/Purchase of quality updates we still wont be close.
8) The game crashes on loads if you are downloading anything for the Network shop at the same time as playing.
9) Presentation (Menu, Music, commentary, SFX) are substandard and in places laughable. Mark Laurenson is clearly reading from a script and sounds nothing like he does in real life (An idiot!)
10) This is no longer a simulation game....
I feel aggrieved and angry when playing the game knowing that I purchased a PS3 when I did largely for this game and what I have in front of me is an unfinished product.
Make no mistake this game could ruin the entire series for Konami. We know they dont have the Budget, Licences etc that EA has put into FIFA but the have a wealth of experience and this was not utilised to the potential of the Next gen Consoles.
I agree many of these problems could possibly be fixed, many we've put up with over the years because the game play comes first and always should but now the game play is suffering too and glimpses of what Pro Evo was during play is not enough. Some of it could be fixed with Patches but fundamentally they cant fix the game.
FIFA which up until now has been a £1000000 Sports car which looks and sounds great but has no wheels now seems to have found its wheels and has overtaken Pro Evo being the Cheap Durable reliable car that can be trusted to never break down and always surprise you. Well that being said is the only surprise this year.
For the fist time in 7 years I purchased a copy of FIFA and although it's by no means perfect by a long stretch. The things that are wrong with it (Slightly Slow tempo, extra touches where not needed by players and player names on kits not always to size etc) are hardly major and the game looks and plays for the first time like a real game of football. It pains me to say it and although I'll hang onto my copy of PES 2008 in the hope that it can in some part be fixed. I am now a FIFA fan and urge anyone out there to at least see what they are missing out on.

1) Far too many keepers errors(sometimes 3 goals a game can come from keeper errors)
2) The usual "final whistle wont go until you get the ball" yes same old problem you could go 35 mins of injury time while the opposition has it but as soon as you get it peep peep peep.
3) Referee! dont bother trying to slide tackle. Definate yellow for slight contact, often a red.
4) The computer gets the rub of the green, luck of the bounce about a 5 to 1 ratio.
5) Players have heads like 50 pence pieces
6) Strips. Although the strips look fantastic(Im a Celtic fan and there great) the amount of times there is a colour clash and now there is no option to choose strips and more often than not its the refs strip.
All in all its worth having and will no doubt improve next year. Pro Evo 1 for PS2 wasnt great but was still better than FIFA.
