Criterion's vice-president Alex Ward has said that he "firmly believes" the UK has "the best coders, artists and creative people" in the world, adding that he longs for the country to be "back leading the [industry] like it was in the 1980s."

"I do wish the UK was back leading the world like it was in the 1980s," Ward told Develop magazine.

"I firmly believe we have the best coders, artists and creative people here.

"My heroes are still [Jeff] Minter, [Archer] MacLean, [Antony] Crowther, [Andrew] Braybrook and the like. And let's not forget the great software houses of Quicksilva, Alligata, Llamasoft or Gremlin Graphics."

The UK game development scene has hit the headlines on numerous occasions over the last few years following the high-profile closures of British studios Black Rock, Bizarre Creations and EA's own Bright Light.

It was assumed that the government's snub of tax breaks played a substantial role in each of the studios' closures.

As a result, many publishers chose to locate their bigger development teams in other countries where tax credits provided more ideal financial relief.

Tax breaks to UK game development studios were eventually introduced by chancellor George Osborne earlier this year, offering a significant financial boost to the games development sector.

I acknowledge and admire all types of talent writers, artists, sportsmen & women, musicians and so on. I'm also an avid supporter of live music - I have a lot of very talented friends who are musicians and they work their asses off for very little reward, while a vast amount of the british public idolises nobody celebrities from reality TV shows who get handed fame and fortune for no reason what so ever - I really don't see how me broadening my tastes has anything to do with what is actually a true statement about the state of this countries entertainment scene.

This country was the driving force in music with some of the most talented song writers and musicians in musical history - the Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Maiden, Cream, U2, The Who, Small Faces, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, T Rex, The Kinks, The Clash, The Pistols just off the top of my head. Most of these would be lucky to get a record deal in this day and age - while morons in charge, like Louis Walsh, are handing them out to idiots like Jedward!

I don't think thats fair. There are plenty of talented people who go far in all walks of life... maybe you need to broaden your own tastes and you would see that. As for generalising the 'British general public', well that's just nonsense.

@guyderman that's a different kind of talent your referring to, it's called talentless, sadly and gladly gaming is still classed as underground and game developers won't be praised in the way that blonde Essex Morons or movie directors do, you mention cliff belenzki or Peter molynuex (can't spell) to most ppl even gamers they they would say who but say Essex slapper or Steven Spielberg they would say there well famous. I forgot my point n seem to have gone off topic now sorry, anyway we have real talent n it's about time someone noticed it just wish I had some lol.

Sadly most of this country isn't interested in talent - you only have to see shows like Britains Got Talent, TOWIE, Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, X Factor, whatever *****e Peter Andre and Katie Price have going on, Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity and countless other examples to see how obssessed the British general public is with the genuinely untalented. It even shows in our music charts where manufactured crap is driven to the top while talented musicians are lucky to even get a sniff of a record deal! Sad state of affairs really, especially from a country where talent used to shine and influenece so many artists!

This country is bursting at the seams with incredibly talented people. Unfortunately there's no work for any of us.
