Publisher won't give up on new IP, says EA Games president Frank Gibeau.

The execution of DICE's ambitious Mirror's Edge "fell short," EA Games president Frank Gibeau has told Develop.

"What I learned from Mirror's Edge is that you have to execute, you have to spend more time on a game to ensure it's polished, and you need to have the depth and persistence of an online game," said Gibeau.

"First-person parkour across buildings is fun, but to be blunt, Mirror's Edge's execution fell short.

"There were issues with the learning curve, the difficulty, the narrative, and then there was no multiplayer either. The key learning from us was that if you're going to be bold with that kind of concept, you need to take it as far as it can go in development."

Another game which Gibeau says didn't quite meet EA's expectations was Dead Space.

"Dead Space was different," he said. "It made money for us, but didn't hit expectations. We felt like we had an IP that struck a chord, and one that hit quality, but again it missed multiplayer modes. So when we re-worked Dead Space, we looked at how to make it a better idea, how do we make the story more engrossing, how do we build Isaac as a character, how do we make this game a success online."

Despite missing the mark with Mirror's Edge, the game does appear to have a future at EA.

"But one thing I will say is that we won't give up on those IPs. A new idea obviously has a lot of risk attached to it, but if you get it all right it can be huge," Gibeau concluded.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Gibeau's comments about sticking with new IPs is good news for fans of Mirror's Edge. It's not the first time EA has suggested the IP has a future.

Back in June 2009 EA's Patrick Soderlund told VideoGamer.com: "You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do."

No weapons! They just need to find a better balance between avoiding weapons and tackling enemies, maybe where bullet time could actually work properly for once, avoiding bullets before launching at attackers.

Also, how about using scenery as a 'weapon'? A crane could be dislodged with a kick to send the end of it in to enemies. Still no guns and could work within the parkour context.

I hope there is some more of a guide as to where I am going as Lee has picked up. Plus to have more freedom in the free-running. I felt the game was quite restricted as you was forced to stay on the path than go off and find alternative route.

I liked the game, and the concept was good. Just lacked other things, perhaps if they included weapons and a slowdown time motion aswell, then i think that would make the game more enjoyable. I also was struggling on where to go, but thats why its fun to keep trying new things and sometimes the game surprises you.

What bothered me the most about Mirror's Edge is that for a game that was all about free running, I had to press the "Where the hell am I supposed to go?" button far too often. And, even when I pressed it, it didn't always offer practical help. It worked quite well at full speed, but since maybe 2% of the game was played this way with the rest being crawling through corridors, it just seemed as 'nearly right' as the rest of the game did.

Providing they can concentrate on what was great about the first game, a sequel has definite potential. No doubt they wil just add more guns, though.

While being an incredibly fun game, many aspects of it could, nay Should, have had a bit more work on them. The levels a bit more open, the combat a little better, a few more levels, more multiplayer options (which isn't a bad thing if as innovative as the main gameplay, and not just tacked on)...

It was a lot of fun, and a shame it didn't sell as well as they had hoped - I still remember the very first preview, and thinking it looked fantastic.

This might as well be a confirmation of multiplayer, and not just co-op given that he said "persistence of an online game". Hopefully it will be in the format of running away from people, chasing people, and racing in general as opposed to just shooting eachother and OH WAIT he's run away now go chase him.
