United Front Games' Sleeping Dogs, famous for being dropped by Activision, appears to have been worth the effort from publisher Square Enix - the game entered the UK video game chart at No.1.

Sleeping Dogs becomes the fifth best-selling game on first week sales in 2012.

Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. 2 takes second place, pushing SEGA's London 2012 down to third place after three weeks at No.1.

LEGO Batman 2 slips to No.4, Mario & Sonic 2012 drops to No.5.

Elsewhere retailer promotions helped Ghost Recon: Future Solider and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 re-enter the Top 10 at No.8 and No.10, respectively.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Whilst Sleeping Dogs appears a big hit, it won't be until sales figures are revealed that we really understand if Square Enix made a good call in picking up the discarded open-world action game.

Darksiders II and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron both hit stores this week, meaning Sleeping Dogs is unlikely to retain its No.1 position for a second week. We reckon Darksiders II could just pip the Transformers sequel to the top spot, but expect a close run race.

Dark Souls also makes its debut on PC, but with some negative press about its shoddy port we're not confident it will chart inside the Top 20.

Wow, i've not really checked out Sleeping Dogs at all, but considering it's reviewed so well and is now No.1, it's probably worth picking up!

A good game released at just the right time to capitalise on the desires of many for a new release.

Square-Enix certainly know how to set the Fall/Winter release schedule rolling - I wonder if any other publishers will attempt to jump on this spot next year, as well...

Sad to see Risen 2 fall so drastically, though... that should have been a budget release.

Yay for Sleepy Dogs! I'm really enjoying what I've played so far and surely this early success should really annoy Activision. Now, my time will be strained between Sleepy Dogs and Darksiders 2. Oh the humanity!

Sleeping Dogs is getting fantastic user reviews in the UK (e.g. check Amazon.co.uk). As word of mouth gets out it won't surprise me to see it retain number one position next week too, though I think it'll be close.

Surprising to see FIFA 12 hanging in there with FIFA 13 looming so close to release.
