Peter Molyneux, Lionhead boss and creative director of Microsoft Game Studios, Europe, has always been one to talk up the future of video games, but this usually means chatting about a new feature for one of his games. Not this time though.

Speaking at the South by Southwest festival during a one-on-one conversation with writer Frank Rose, Molyneux heaped praise on Sony Computer Entertainment and Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain.

"I recommend anyone who wants to start to see the first glimpses of the future of video games to go out and buy it," said Molyneux. "But, personally, I could not bring myself to play more than 90 minutes, because the world that was there was so dark and so emotionally involving I felt emotionally beaten up."

His brief time with the game certainly left a strong impression.

"But there's no question in my mind that games like Heavy Rain - games that have a new fidelity in the way that they present their experiences; obviously made with cinematography and motion capture in mind - can really show the way forward to a new form of entertainment, which is evolving the story and choices and consequences."

He added: "I have to take my hat off to [Quantic Dream] ... There's a couple of things they do in that game which were really revolutionary, and what they do with quick-time is fantastic."

We couldn't agree more. See why you really should go buy Heavy Rain by checking out our review.

You hit the nail on the head there Karlius.

People can bitch about Molyneux all they like, but he's exactly the kind of guy the industry needs, and I have nothing but respect for him.

I was going to say exactly what Jamin said, but thankfully he just saved me few lines of writing and a bit of surpressed rage finding its way out :D

What you are all forgetting is that Molyneux is a genius. He is what's classed as a visionary and while he can get hyped to the Pepsi Max and over sell his aspirations he still has those aspirations and pushes the boundaries of gaming.

I would agree about the one playthrough part. Although, I am very inclined and intrested to see alot more of the alternate endings.

Is it me but games don't hold a emotional effect on me. I respect Molyneux as I do like his work, he is a genius but he does talk some utter sh*te now and then.

I can only see Heavy Rain as one playthrough but who knows! On a rainy day I might put it in the station to play again.

I generally go by the rule that Molyneux talks sh*t so I'll probably never play Heavy Rain again.
