Wants to use a 'similar drama to tell' different stories in any genre.

Fans hoping for a second helping of Heavy Rain are out of luck, but that doesn't mean they won't find similar experiences in what its creator David Cage plans to make next.

According to the Quantic Dream studio boss, Heavy Rain was the start of an all new genre which his team created.

"We created the genre," Cage told Spong at the BAFTA ceremony in London earlier this week. "We own the genre, and we want to show that Heavy Rain was not a coincidence or a lucky shot - that it was really something that makes sense and that we can build on.

"But at the same time I didn't want to make a sequel. I made that very clear before knowing whether the game would be a success or a failure, because I want to show that it's really a genre. Which means that you can use a similar drama to tell any type of story in any genre and in any style.

"So, we are going to explore different directions. Still very dark, still for adults, but completely different from Heavy Rain. We want to satisfy our fans, but we want to surprise them too. That's our challenge."

Cage is currently working on two unannounced projects.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

We would have loved to see a Heavy Rain sequel - or a story set within the same world - but we're equally interested in seeing what Quantic Dream can produce next; something similar, but also very different.

shoot. It would have been great to see Madison Page's hot ass in another game.

Even before Heavy Rain's release we weren't expecting a sequel.

Interested to see what Cage and QD come up with next.

As I've said before, I'm happy enough that they're not making a Heavy Rain sequel. I will be very interested in Cage's next game, even if it is a Sci-Fi setting.

HD version of Farenheit? I hope so.

I think DLC would have worked well for HR, not a se/pre quel however.

wasn't the rumour of a sci fi setting for the next game?

He's said this before, and I'm glad he wants to do something different. He's fed up of serial killers, apparently, which is understandable.

Am glad they are not doing a sequel really. There are too many sequels in games and I don't think they need a direct sequel for them to create a compelling game.
