UPDATE: Sony has claimed that its reference to GTA 5 on PS4 was a mistake and apologised for the "typo".

In a tweet posted on its official Twitter account following this evening's blunder, Sony UK said: "Apologies for the typo about GTA V. It's due for release on PS3 on September 17th."

But if Sony's tweet really was a typo, why did it also retweet somebody else's tweet referencing GTA 5 on PS4...?

ORIGINAL STORY: When it comes to leaking details on GTA 5, it hasn't been a particularly good week for Sony - and the platform holder may have just let slip on an unannounced PlayStation 4 version of Rockstar's upcoming crime game.

Replying to a fan from the platform holder's UK Twitter account this evening, Sony UK said that "GTA V is going to be amazing, especially on the PS4!"

The account also retweeted a tweet from the same fan, which said: "GTA5 ON A #PS4 now that we be gaming at the best - while i am singing I "GET LUCKY" THE DAFT PUNK IN ME IS THINKING."

Though Rockstar has yet to announce a next-gen version of GTA 5, a PS4 and Xbox One version has often been rumoured.

Earlier this month, Rockstar's Leslie Benzies suggested that a next-gen version hadn't been ruled out, saying that the team will "get the current gen version out first and see what happens in the future".

GTA 5 launches on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17. A new trailer is set to be released this Thursday.

On the other hand what's brighter than fooling the public into emptying their wallets on collectors editions etc and than; Surprise gta 5 1.5 next gen, with 3 to 4 different editions and a continuing chain of dlc,= whole lot of time and money devoted to their other top notch gaming projects and gta 6 waaay down the road.

Rockstar doesn't do upward console ports to my knowledge, because the concept of a port is cheap as hell, It would either be a graphical update..or a real change/addition to the series, and the first is nearly pointless with such a large aaa title. I.e "king kong, godfather...console transition ports with hardly a change worth noting besides graphics made purposely for money milking." The latter of the above options would mean having a lengthy development cycle for a new game, and we all know how much time they put between titles.
I don't remember san andreas being ported to the 360, though it was good enough to put up for digital download for ps3 and 360. Rockstar is thus far clear in representing the Biggest gta projects are at the prime/peak, or later years of a consoles lifespan when they have experience with developing and perfecting the ultimate gta experience for the specific technology. The last thing I want is an updated version for the next gen, child's logic. "i want my gta 5 version 1.5" If its of such concern than I'm quite sure you would enjoy the pc modding community.

Point being I'd rather have gta 6, or whatever, well made 2 or 3 years down the road, though I'd expect them to put a rush on it for next gen demand and turn out the technically advanced/feature reduced equivalent of the san andreas-gta 4 comparison.

It would be silly of them not to port it to PS4, easy money. I can see why they aren't eager to say too much as people might hold out and buy it next gen insead but seriously, who has the mental fortitude to wait that long?
