Sony Japan has announced that worldwide shipments of the PlayStation 3 now stand at 2 million units.

These two million units have been distributed equally between North America and Japan, with each territory receiving a million units. According to Sony this is the fastest any of its consoles have achieved this figure.
A Kyodo News report notes that Sony remains confident that it will ship six million PlayStation 3 units by the end of March. This figure should include the PlayStation 3 consoles allocated to the European launch.
Sony has also announced that PlayStation 3 software sales exceeded five million units by the end of 2006, and also revealed that the number of registered users for the console's online service stand at 500,000 worldwide. Of these 500,000, some 300,000 people downloaded Gran Turismo HD Concept in the 20-day period following its release on December 24.
