SCEE has officially announced Gran Turismo 6, the latest racer from Polyphony Digital due for release on PlayStation 3 this winter.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions have not been announced.

Gran Turismo 6 will feature 1200 cars on-disc alongside 33 courses and 71 course layouts, while a "completely renewed" rendering engine "pushes the limits of the PS3" and allows for vehicles that "look much more true to life".

Additional tracks and cars will be released via DLC, with Sony promising DLC drops every month.

The game also features a revamped physics engine, allowing for new suspension, tyre and aerodynamics modelling, and a brand new course maker tool which lets players "generate new tracks... from several kilometres worth of gorgeous scenery".

Enhanced online functionality has also been revealed, with players now able to create and compete in their own racing communities and championships, and engage in social features via a new Gran Turismo app on their smartphone, tablet or PC.

A playable demo of Gran Turismo 6 will be available from July.

"It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo," said series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit.

"Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments.

"I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!"

Details about Gran Turismo 6 leaked earlier this afternoon after a South African website claimed to have obtained Sony's press release, three months after Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny let the cat out of the bag during Sony's PS4 reveal.

I was happy to play the unwelcoming Gran Turismo 5. But there was this moment when I had saved some cyber bucks for a sick motor with a fatty spoiler, a bad ass paint job, drop to the floor skirts and fully raced spec performance, and you know what? I wasn't allowed to buy that car I could see sitting there in my garage of cars that I could buy BECAUSE IT WAS PREMIUM DLC! ***** you!

Pull that ***** again and I'm out. The highly praised Burnout Paradise pulled that *****.. ***** that game too!

...

I'm wondering if the inevitable PS4 version is silent so that people will still spend money on the PS3 version. I personally would hold out for a PS4 version if I knew about one.

Also, Sony are unlikely to willingly overshadow their own other racer launch game (Drive Club).
