Gran Turismo 6 looks set to be a high profile casualty of the jump to the new generation consoles, selling an estimated 300,000 copies in the US since its release, according to analysis firm Cowen & Co.

The 300,000 figure compares poorly with the 1,169,074 copies which Gran Turismo 5 managed in the same period back at its launch.

Sony hasn't offered any official sales figures for Gran Turismo 6.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

The success of PS4, selling over four million units in 2013, may well have shot Sony and Gran Turismo 6 in the foot. The franchise has always delivered solid sales for Sony, but it seems the publisher got the launch timing for this edition completely wrong. Perhaps this will force Sony to accelerate the release of the first PS4 Gran Turismo.

What is it with driving games this last year? All have been disappointing when compared against their predecessors.

Does it not also have something to do with GT5 itself being a mere shadow of how amazing GT3 and GT4 were?

The one thing that still irritates me about the GT series is the total lack of vehicle damage. You can smash into a wall head-on at 170mph and you'll often just bounce off it and potentially land in the right direction.

They go on and on about realism and being the ultimate simulator and then they keep giving us shiny bumper cars.

I disagree that it has anything to do with being released too closely to GT5. There have been 3 Forza games in the same amount of time.
Credit to them for that, the GT cash-cow is now significantly less milked than Forza (2 PS3 GT games, 4 X360 Forza games + already 1 on XBO)

Now poor-ish critical acclaim may well be a genuine factor, but I suspect that it may also have a bit to do with the Mega-CD/32X factor.
GT5 left a poor taste in the mouth for many with it's system of premium vs standard cars and lack of major progress in the series despite the massive wait, huge hype and success of GT4.
GT6 is better than GT5, though it still carries a number of the flaws almost inherent in the series at this point.

Now, if it had been released on PS4 as well, I dare say it would have done a lot better, if only because it's one of those kind of games that many people buying a new console will automatically get due to
a) lack of choice
b) visual showcase
c) long established series.

There might be less PS4's out there, but I believe the kind of early adopters who've bought them are also the kind of people quite likely to pick up a Gran Turismo game.

And this is why Sony are shutting down the GT5 multiplayer servers, I strongly suspect...

What a load of nonsense.

4mil PS4 Units < 82mil PS3 Units

Basically there are 20 PS3's out there to every one PS4.

And the 5million "GLOBAL" copies GT5 had sold in the first 5 weeks would not be achieved even if they sold as many games as the top selling game on PS4 COD @ 1.65mil GLOBAL sales and the sales of GT6 @ 2.08mil combined.

It's simple GT6 was released too close to GT5 and it arrived to poor critical acclaim so people didn't feel the need to buy the game as it didn't seem to offer anything over GT5.

Duhhhh... Only if these developers / think-tank a-holes had coordinated this great game to be PS4 compatible, it would've sold 4x as many!! Whisky Tango Foxtrot where they thinking releasing it on the old platform when a new one just came out??? Who are these people that make these decisions??? Fire them! Release 'em to the dogs! Off with their heads!

No surprise really. If this had been a ps4 launch game It probably would have sold considerably more. I probably would have bought it even though I generally dont like the GT series.

This is why you NEVER launch marquee titles from your old platform right up against your new one. Better luck with GT7.
