Gran Turismo 5 will be updated almost a year after its release with Spec 2.0, series creator and Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed.

In a Tweet Yamauchi said: "GT fans, thanks for waiting... The GT5 Spec 2.0 update is coming the 3rd week of October, with DLC following a week later."

It's not know what the Spec 2.0 update and DLC will offer, but if the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec update is anything to go by fans are in for a real treat. GT5P Spec 2.0 added 34 cars, the High Speed Ring racetrack, two new modes and a host of new features and events.

The Spec 2.0 update for GT5P was free.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Funny how Gran Turismo 5 will be receiving an update roughly around the time Forza Motorsport 4 hits the Xbox 360. Could the promise of new content prevent fans from jumping to Forza.

I think the UI designers from Polyphony do jigsaw puzzles at lunch time.

Adding a working menu will instantly improve the game.

All it needs is online leaderboards. Not a huge ask, and yet I imagine that they will add a thousand other things that are of no tangible benefit before they get round to making it a complete online game.

If they've built a game around their 'driving experience' as part of the update then I might actually buy GT5. Not sure the update will have finished downloading by the time GT6 is out, though.
