Activision has announced GoldenEye 007: Reloaded - an HD version of last year's Eurocom developed GoldenEye redux - for the Xbox 360 and PS3. It's scheduled to be released this autumn.

Eurocom is still handling development, and has built an entirely new engine to support HD resolutions and 60fps. The game will feature the same campaign as last year's game, will still include four-player competitive split-screen multiplayer alongside 16-player online, and will also feature a new challenge mode called MI6 Operations.

VideoGamer.com has posted its first hands-on impressions of a pre-alpha build of the game.

"This is the biggest and best GoldenEye yet," said Activision producer James Steer in an interview with VideoGamer.com.

As the only person in the office (possibly entire world) who will play an FPS on the Wii without sulking, Tom Orry slapped down an optimistic 7/10 in his original GoldenEye 007 review. Did it match up to Rare's 1997 original? Spoiler: no.

"Following a game that, for many, is one of the best FPS experiences of all time was never going to be easy," said Tom, "but developer Eurocom has done its best to deliver a game that stands on its own two feet - all while carrying the odd nod to the game we know and love. Questions over the Wii's ability to house great first-person shooters still remain, while the CoD-like multiplayer can't quite capture what made the original such a hit."

Rare's 1997 GoldenEye 007 for the N64 is, as you'll remember, one of the most iconic first-person shooters of all time. PC gamers will tell you Quake 2 and Half-Life were better (they were), but for an entire generation of console gamers it was the first real taste of the genre that would go on to utterly consume the whole games industry for ever and ever and ever and ever.

Steer also revealed that GoldenEye 007 Reloaded will run in 1080 on PlayStation 3, while the Xbox 360 version is limited to 720p.
